Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Prefabricated corrugated-iron buildings have been manufactured in Britain since the middle of the nineteenth century. Structures ranging from humble cottages to substantial churches, and from halls to hospitals and hotels, have since then been produced, packed and consigned to destinations at home and abroad. Though often regarded as cheap and temporary, these buildings are an expression of a progressive and vital chapter in the history of Britain's construction industry. First used in 1829, corrugated-iron has become a familiar element in vernacular architecture and construction, bringing its particular character and colour to landscapes both rural and urban. The author draws on a wide range of research to highlight the significance, in Britain and across the world, of these oft-overlooked structures. Soft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. This copy is like new and is gift inscribed and signed by the author. "By the dawn of the eighteenth century Crieff held Scotland's most important cattle markets. In 1723 at one fair alone 20,000 cattle were sold, no doubt one of the drovers then being Rob Roy MacGregor. Through no longer as large as that, the markets were still in evidence in the mid nineteenth century, drawing stock from the Isle of Skye as well as many other remote Highland glens. This was also the time of the maximum expansion of the British Empire, and the wars that were associated with concomitant colonisation. Out of the latter and into the former scene marched Samuel Woods of the Forty Second Black Watch. On Skye the drama and violence he had experienced as a warrior of the Empire led him into events that changed his life."--Back cover. Signed by Author(s).
