Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a narrative history detailing King Philip III's reign over Spain from 1598 to 1621, a period of profound change for the monarchy and Europe. The author explores the complex political and religious landscape of the time, providing rich insights into the motivations and choi…ces of Philip III and his contemporaries. The author argues that despite the vast resources of the Spanish Empire, a combination of internal problems, such as a weak economy and a rigid social structure, and external pressures, such as the rise of Protestant powers and the growing strength of France, led to a decline in Spain's power and influence. The book offers a nuanced and revisionist interpretation of a crucial period shaping the course of European history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Leatherbound. Condition: Very good. Second Edition. 2 vols.: [4], 460; [2], 389, [18] p. Full leather. Front hinge cracking in vol. 1. Corners bumped. Bookplates on front pastedowns. Some rough page edges at the rear of vol. 1 from approximately 413 to 441. This collaborative history was begun by Robert Watson (ca.17301781), Sco…ttish minister and academic, but edited and completed by William Thomson (1746-1817) after Watson's death. The publication of this work established Thomson's literary reputation, and he went on to publish numerous pamphlets, biographies, memoirs, and treatises. The weak King Philip III of Spain (ruled 1598 -1621) may seem a rather uninteresting historical subject, but his significance lies in the fact that Spain's decline as a world power began in his reign.
