This collaborative history was begun by Robert Watson (ca.17301781), Sco…ttish minister and academic, but edited and completed by William Thomson (1746-1817) after Watson's death. The publication of this work established Thomson's literary reputation, and he went on to publish numerous pamphlets, biographies, memoirs, and treatises. The weak King Philip III of Spain (ruled 1598 -1621) may seem a rather uninteresting historical subject, but his significance lies in the fact that Spain's decline as a world power began in his reign.

These volumes were praised by the likes of Horace Walpole, and went through several publications, reaching the seventh edition by 1812.Watson was working on the delineation of the reign of Philip the Third when he died, and the work was completed by William Thomson and was originally published in 1783. Thomson grew in popularity with this work.The History of the Reign of Philip the Second, this edition was published in 1794. ESTC Reference T145522These two volumes explore a fascinating historical time in Spain, seeing events such as the Revolt in the Spanish Netherlands, an economic decline, a War with the Dutch, and the entry to the Thirty Years' War. In a full calf binding. externally sound with some shelf wear and a touch of edge wear, as well as some rubbing and scuffing particularly to the spine. Volume one of 'Philip II' has suffered a loss of the spine label. With William Muir's bookplate to the front pastedown to each volume, as well as a minor previous owner's inscription to the front pastedown of volume one, undated. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint spotting to the first and last few leaves, and the odd minor spot tot he occasional leaf; otherwise, the pages are generally bright and clean. Good. None (illustrator). book.
