It is laid out as five books spread across three softbound volumes, with page numbers running continuously from one volume to the next. The editors describe it as a kind of encyclopedia of learning and vocal self-expression, and the chapters can be read in any order. Cross-references inside the chapters point the reader to other chapters and volumes, and nearly every chapter closes with a bibliography. The "bodymind" idea at its center comes from research showing that the nervous, endocrine and immune systems are linked. The later pages include chapters on how voices change during adolescence in both males and females. Among the contributors are ear-nose-throat physicians, an endocrinologist, a speech pathologist and an audiologist.…
