Hardcover. Condition: Fair to Good. Frank Holland & J. Warren Thyng (illustrator). First. 276 illustrated pages. George W. Browne (1851-1930) was a very prolific writer, School teacher and superintendent of schools at Deerfield, N.H. where he was born and attended schools himself. Beginning at the age of 16 he wrote dozens of books including many NH town histories, and a favorite of mine "The Franconia Gateway and Region of Lost River" in 1926. He died 4 years later in 1930. Scarce. Faif to good with old repairs noted, from Town of Gorham with high school stamps inside front dated '25-3-16 (Publication year, lkikely given to schools by the author/publisher). A cloth strip was added inside both covers at the spine (publisher?) to strengthen the area, it did not halp as the FC is loose from the binding, An easy fix though.

This book offers an intriguing glimpse into the life of famed American poet John Greenleaf Whittier, through the eyes of artist Warren Thwing who spent many summers with Whittier in New Hampshire. Thwing's reminiscences paint a vivid portrait of Whittier as a complex and often enigmatic figure, revealing his love of nature, his wry sense of humor, and his deep commitment to social justice. The author provides a rich historical context for Whittier's work, exploring the literary and political landscape of 19th-century America. Through insightful analysis of Whittier's poetry, Thwing illuminates the poet's keen observation of the human condition, his empathy for the marginalized, and his abiding faith in the power of nature. Beyond its biographical focus, this book delves into the broader themes that shaped Whittier's writingâ"themes of friendship, loss, and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. Thwing's own experiences as an artist add a unique perspective, offering insights into Whittier's creative process and the ways in which nature inspired his poetic vision. Ultimately, this book is not just a biography of a great American poet but also a celebration of the enduring power of art to capture the essence of human experience and inspire generations to come. Through Thwing's evocative prose and intimate recollections, readers will gain a profound appreciation for Whittier's enduring legacy as a poet, a humanitarian, and a chronicler of the American spirit. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
