Cwm notis Antonii Thysii, published by Lugduni Batavorum Leffen, 1652. Presumed 1st Edition Thus. 670pp + indices. Steel engraved frontispiece and page headings. Internally Very good clean tight sound square, no bookplate or inscription, pale easily erasable pencil underlining to prelims to pp16, note of editions handwritten in ink and dated 1715 to lower endpaper, no further marks of any kind, well held in joints and hinges, remarkably free from foxing or browning. Beautifully bound in white vellum leather stitched to joints, French yapped to fore-edges and with handwritten author and date black ink; 'Lactanttius 1652'. Lusius Caecilius Firmianus Lactantius 250-325, was born a Pagan, became an early Chrisian apologist, was declared Professor of Rhetoric by emperor Diocletian before resigning and living in poverty, was subsequently reinstated to high office as Latin tutor to the son of Crispus, the latter becoming Caesar and being put to death by his father Constantine. The volume in hand contains all surviving works, and is beautifully bound in vellum, the same used for the Magna Carta and all laws in England. Only one Vellum maker remains in the UK. An increasingly uncommon Edition, bound in an increasingly uncommon material, by an increasingly sought after author. His works were copied in manuscript several times in the 15th century and were first printed in 1465 by the Germans Arnold Pannartz and Konrad Sweynheim at the Abbey of Subiaco, the first book printed in Italy to have a date of printing. It was probably the fourth book ever printed in Italy. A copy of this 1465 edition was sold at auction in 2000 for more than $1 million.

Thysius, given to honor the life and death of the great Martinus Tromp, a renowned Dutch naval hero of the 17th century. The oration pays tribute to Tromp's military bravery and skill, his unwavering patriotism, and his deep religious faith. Thysius places Tromp within the broader context of Dutch maritime history, highlighting his role in securing Dutch dominance over the seas and his significance as a symbol of national pride. The book explores the themes of heroism, duty, and sacrifice, delving into the complexities of Tromp's character and examining his legacy as a military leader. Through Thysius's eloquent words, readers gain insight into the life of a remarkable individual and the values that shaped the Dutch Golden Age. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

OCLC (No. 458898240) locates only one copy, at the Bibliotheque Nationale de France. ~LL~ [2.0P] The extant works of Gaius Sallustius Crispus, usually anglicized as Sallust (86-c.?35 BC), a historian and politician of the Roman Republic from a plebeian family. Probably born at Amiternum in the country of the Sabines, Sallust became a partisan of Julius Caesar (100 to 44 BC), circa 50s BC. He is the earliest known Latin-language Roman historian with surviving works to his name, of which Conspiracy of Catiline on the eponymous conspiracy, The Jugurthine War on the eponymous war, and the Histories (of which only fragments survive) remain extant. As a writer, Sallust was primarily influenced by the works of the 5th-century BC Greek historian Thucydides. During his political career he amassed great and ill-gotten wealth from his governorship of Africa. This edition of Sallust was edited by Antonius Thysius (c. 1603-1665), a Calvinist theologian and professor of theology at Harderwijk and Leiden Universities and Rector of Leiden University in 1633. In 1655, he became librarian of the University library as successor to Daniel Heinsius. He wrote numerous works on many subjects (law, philology, history, politicology) and edited many editions of modern and classical authors, such as Seneca, Sallust and Lactantius. This work was published before his appointment as historiographer of the States of Holland (in 1659).

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 8vo (20 x 12 cm). *8 A-Z8 Aa2- Aa8 Bb-Zz8 Aaa-Hhh8 Iii7; [8] 844 pp. plus 16 of index. Engraved title page; dedicatory letter to Christina, Queen of Sweden. Opposite the t-page is an award of merit dated 1657. Floriated initials; Roman and Italic type, in Latin. Slight yellowing and foxing, but still very crisp. Contemporary vellum; ties missing; blind-stamped decoration with two rampant lions supporting a coat of arms surmounted by a crown on upper and lower covers. Spine in five separate compartments with blind-stamped decoration; manuscript title and date on spine. Manuscript ex-libris on first flyleaf with date (1863); manuscript inscription on previous owner p. 1 (P[eter] L[aing] Gordon of Craigmyle 1860). Overall, a very good crisp copy. The engraved title page depicts a woman who is holding a spear in her right hand, and a cornucopia and a sail in her left; she is crowned by a laurel wreath, her breast is uncovered, and she is stepping on a tortoise. In the background we see the Colosseum and what could be identified as the Arch of Constantine. At her feet is the cartouche with the imprint in Latin. The Rijksmuseum have identified her as the allegorical representation of Europa, following the description found in Cesare Ripa s Iconologia. The engraving is by Reinier van Persijn (1615-1668), as testified by the signature at the left of the foot of Europa. The award of merit opposite the title page reads: Bonae spei ac liberalis ingenii adolescentulo (I. H. Tatum) hoc incitamentum laudis & virtutis praemium in Classe (Quinta) publice dabant Ampliss. Dd. Coss. & Scholarchae Amstelodamenses. Ita testor (Cornelius Stadus) Gymnasii publici in (veteri) urbis re- gione Rector. Examine (astivo). CIC I ƆC. It is decorated by a woodcut in which we see two rampant lions supporting a coat of arms under a crown (like the blind-stamped decoration on the covers); it is likely this could have been the coat of arms of the school which awarded the book to the young student.
