Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The only thing more dangerous than a king is his heir in this first English translation of the beautifully heartbreaking (Kirkus Reviews) historical novel inspired the popular TV series from one of Chinas best-known authors of romantic tragedy. There is no room for love in an empire. Qu Xiaofeng has been living in Shangjing for three years now. A naive, happy-go-lucky treaty bride from the desert kingdom of Xiliang, she has everything she could ever want as the crown princess of the Li Empireeverything except the crown princes heart. Because Li Chengyin is a heartless boy. Cruel, jealous, and ruthless, he has given his adolescence to the cutthroat contention for the throne and, now that he is the heir presumptive, largely ignores his bride in favor of the girl he seems to really love. Xiaofeng doesnt mindmuch. It leaves her more time to sneak out of the manor to go drinking and riding in the streets, living just the way she wants to. But one day another boy shows up, claiming to be a sweetheart from a life she cant remember having lived. As Xiaofeng puzzles out the tangled threads of her past and her complicated feelings about the enigmatic, distant husband she loves and hates in equal measure, what she doesnt realize is that shes setting a course straight to tragedy. Because the only place more dangerous than the palace is the crown princes court, the only thing harder to be than a king is his heir, and the path to the throne is paved with blood. Power will always have its pricethe only question is if Xiaofeng will survive long enough to pay. The only thing more dangerous than a king is his heir in this romantic tragedy perfect for readers of Captive Prince and The Winner's Curse, from one of China's best-known authors of heartbreak, now in paperback. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1998 Reprint. Text/BRAND NEW. Black linen boards w/gilt spine lettering/VG w/loss to upper back corner. DJ/VG w/small closed tear to upper spine edge, & stain to inside of upper back corner. PO name to fEP. Guide to the mausoleum of Qin Shi Huangdi [Chin Shih-huang Ti], the First Emperor of China, unearthed 1974 near present day Xi'an. The first unifier of China, Qin Shi Huang linked the Great Wall of China to a continuous whole against northern nomadic incursions, standardized measurements, script, and thought (infamous burning of books). The tomb, estimated to have been built by corvée labor of some 700,000 strong over 38 years, suggests that the terracotta soldiers, horses and the like speak of an ancient past when living humans and animals were entombed with the powerful, sacrificedaccompanied final resting places of leaders and some notion of future resurrection or transmigration to immortality (note the Qin expedition in search of Peng-lai Islands where people were immortal). The Qin Dynasty, 221 - 206 BC, was very short lived. LAID-IN: Hand-out to Chinese Archaeology exhibit at the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco of 2000, and newspaper clippings of ants attacking the terra-cotta warriors, and discovery of remains of a "great wall" contructed during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) to ward off foreign incursions in the south. Argentine's outstanding man of letter, Jorge Luis Borges (1899 - 1989) wrote an eloquent essay on the vast undertakings of Qin Shih Huang titled "The Wall and the Books". Strong copy despite flaws.

At the core of Chinese civilization are the spirit of traditional Chinese philosophy and Chinese characters. Having helped bind together the civilization, they have both benefited from and contributed to the formation of a unified multi-ethnic nation. Chinese culture, documented in Chinese characters, had long played a unique, leading role in the history of ancient civilizations. For thousands of years, as an important part of human civilization, it has striven for self-improvement by discarding obsolete and embracing fresh elements. Students around the world come to China to learn not only Chinese characters, but Chinese culture and arts as well, and in so doing expand the influence of Chinese civilization in the world.
