Hero Tilemann (1873-1907) wurde durch seine medizinische und humanitäre Teilnahme am Burenkrieg (1899-1902) in Südafrika sowie seine posthum veröffentlichten Tagebücher bekannt. - "Obwohl Tilemann über seine Erlebnisse im Burenkrieg Tagebuchaufzeichnungen angefertigt hatte, die posthum 1908 veröffentlicht wurden, war bislang nur wenig über den ostfriesischen Arzt bekannt. Erst durch die Übernahme eines umfangreicheren Nachlasses in den Standort Aurich des Niedersächsischen Landesarchivs ist es möglich, mehr über Hero Tilemann zu erfahren. Auf Grundlage dieses Nachlasses widmet sich der Vortrag nicht nur den Beweggründen, die Tilemann veranlassten, als Ambulanzarzt nach Südafrika zu gehen, sondern auch seinen einzelnen Stationen während des Burenkrieges, der sich sehr rasch von einem konventionellen Stellungskrieg zu einem Guerillakrieg wandelte und bereits einen Vorgeschmack auf die katastrophalen Auswirkungen von "totalen" Kriegen vermittelte. Ebenso wird Tilemanns Haltung zur Genfer Konvention untersucht. Während Tilemann selbst darauf achtete, die Artikel der Genfer Konvention im Burenkrieg vollständig zu erfüllen, verletzten die Briten in seinen Augen mehrmals die internationale Vereinbarung. So hat er nach der Rückkehr in die Heimat und bis kurz vor seinem Tod 1907 vergeblich Entschädigungsansprüche an die britische Regierung für die Verbrennung seiner Ambulanzwagen und die Plünderung der von Tilemann provisorisch errichteten Hospitäler gestellt" (Niedersächsisches Landesarchiv). - N. a.
