Docente universitario e naturalista, Tilli viaggiò a lungo soprattutto in Oriente ed in Africa per procurarsi campioni vegetali e flora esotica al fine di studiarne caratteristiche e modalità di coltivazione. Fu tra i primi in Italia ad utilizzare le serre, rendendo possibili la coltivazione di ananas, caffè e altre piante provenienti da paesi esotici.  Prima ed unica edizione, rara e pregiata, accuratamente impressa su carta forte, dedicata al Duca Cosimo III de Medici. ĞIl numero delle piante quivi registrate ascende a 5000. Mercé la sua premura grandissima gli riuscì nello spazio di pochi anni ridurre il Giardino di Pisa, di cui ne era il Soprintendente, in grado che potesse stare a fronte dei più rinomati Giardini d'Europa. Agli studi della Bottanica, e della medicina congiunse il Tilli quegli delle Fisiche esperienze, per mezzo delle quali sugli esempi del Redi e del Bellini suoi Maestri liberò la Medicina da una quantità grande di pregiudizi, di errori, e d'impostureğ (Moreni). Con grande vignetta incisa in rame sul frontespizio impresso in rosso e nero, ritratto calcografico dell'Autore inciso da T. van Cruysse su disegno di T. Redi, 2 tavole ripiegate incise in rame con prospetti dell'Orto botanico e, in fine, 50 tavole calcografiche numerate, recanti raffigurazioni di piante. I prospetti e alcune tavole numerate sono sottoscritti da Cosimo Mogalli. Occhietto presente. Prima ed unica edizione di questa splendida opera dedicata all'Orto Botanico di Pisa da Michelangelo Tilli (1655-1740), che ne fu direttore a partire dal 1685; uno dei più belli e antichi giardini botanici d'Europa. Hunt II, 457, osserva che l'elenco alfabetico delle oltre 5000 piante in quest'opera è "one of the most important of the eighteenth century, and the volume memorializes the garden for all time".
