Parti…endo de la base que todo orden político hace propio el temor primigenio hobessiano para dar un sentido de seguridad a su ciudadanía, debemos aceptar que el miedo es un aspecto inherente a la constitución histórica de los Estados nacionales. Los objetivos del libro, claros a grandes rasgos, versan en estudiar como el régimen militar que toma el poder el 11 de septiembre de 1973, manipula los miedos en los diversos documentos oficiales para fundar un nuevo imaginario colectivo donde lo privado sustituye a lo "público". Apoyado en Bauman, el autor hace una lectura brillante del problema cuando formula lo que a nuestro entender es la tesis central que une a todos los capítulos: Pese a que el Estado democrático moderno, propio de una sociedad capitalista y de mercado, "se propuso casi desde el principio erigirse en una agencia destinada a reducir el miedo o a eliminarlo por completo de la vida de sus súbditos/ciudadanos", en Chile ocurre lo contrario, pues desde mediados de la década del sesenta se produce gradualmente una pérdida de la estabilidad temporal que amparaba los sentimientos de arraigo sociopolítico. Esta tendencia se acentúa durante el gobierno de la Unidad Popular, tanto por procesos estructurales variados, endógenos y exógenos, algunos de anterior desarrollo, que establecen elementos de inseguridad. Timmermann delinea su campo de estudios empleando los discursos oficiales del régimen cívico-militar chileno para llegar a comprender cuáles son los compo-nentes y cómo se relacionan en el objeto fundante del miedo. En perspectiva, comprendiendo que el miedo funciona en el organismo emitiendo una "señal de alarma" para disponer la lucha o la huida, se debe aceptar que entonces, como pensaban los filósofos socráticos, existe una tendencia en toda persona a separarse del dolor, a evitarlo, a imaginarlo antes de que suceda.
