First edition, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, previous owner's name and inscription: 'With love to a dear old friend, from Dennis and Alison.', b&w illustrations, and glossary. Told through the eyes of an Orkney schoolboy, recalling the happy - and not so happy - incidents of an innocent childhood in an environment quite different to the one we know today. It was wartime and thousands of troops were stationed in the islands; money was tight, very tight, and people had to "mak do"; there was the luxury of a hot bath most Friday nights with neighbours sharing the bath water; wooden home-made toys were built to last; plastic, fridges, supermarkets and central heating had yet to be invented; open door-less public loos were the norm; most bairns had fleas at some stage; and there was corporal punishment at home and in the schools. The book is illustrated by the author's own paintings and cartoons.
