Published by Flagstaff, Arizona, 1886
Magazine / Periodical
Newspaper. Condition: Very Good. A scarce early issue of the Arizona Champion from October 16, 1886. Tears up to two inches, chips, penciled margin notes, and margin dampstains. Leaves are separated. One editorial discusses how Geronimo has been more popular since his surrender than before it, with another report from a former governor stating that General Miles' conditional surrender was best for peace. There is a notice from early Grand Canyon tourist guide and developer John Hance stating his claim to land at Grand Canyon. Another column answers the question "Are Cowboys Degenerating?", and one article argues that Flagstaff really needs a bank. Two other columns feature the illustrated brands and a reward proclamation for the Mogollon Live Stock Protective Association, with the brands of many well-known early Flagstaff ranchers. A timetable of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad, a company instrumental in the land deals and settlement of northern Arizona, is on the front page. The Arizona Champion was published in Flagstaff from 1884-1891, when it became the Coconino Sun. The paper recorded much on northern Arizona's early ranching industry and development. ; 23 1/2" x 17 1/4"; 4 pp.

Newspaper. Condition: Very Good. A scarce early issue of the Arizona Champion from July 17, 1886. Chips with some paper loss and repairs on margins. Leaves are separated, with some penciled notes on top margin. This issue has four full columns of paid notices by the Aztec Land and Cattle Company regarding its claims to some of its 2,000,000 acres in northern Arizona. The Aztec company, better known as the Hashknife Outfit, became notorious for the crimes of its cowboys. In another place 28 railroad cars of Aztec cattle bound for Arizona are mentioned. There are two columns of illustrated brands from the Mogollon Live Stock Protective Association, including the Aztec's brand, in an early $500 reward notice from the association. Articles include shootings, rustling, General Miles reporting "that the hostile Apaches are returning from Mexico to Arizona" a few months before Geronimo's official surrender, and the need for a good hotel in Flagstaff. Newspaper. Condition: Very Good. A rare issue of the Arizona Champion newspaper with information on the infamous Aztec Land and Cattle Company, also known as the Hashknife Outfit. Chipped edges and one small hole in pages, some penciled content notes on top margins. Four full columns on the last page are paid advertisements of the company concerning the legal title of its land, over two million acres in Arizona. Aztec was known for its legions of murdering and robbing cowboys in eastern Arizona. Two other columns feature the illustrated brands and a reward proclamation for the Mogollon Live Stock Protective Association, with the brands of Aztec and many well-known early Flagstaff ranchers. A separate ad shows the brand of the Babbitt Brothers of Flagstaff, who later acquired much of Aztec's land when the company eventually collapsed and also used the Hashknife brand.
