Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Call of the Wapiti By Ray Tinsley. Publisher: AH & AW Reed, Wellington, 1979, First Edition. Good hardback with jacket, no inscriptions. Brown cloth boards are quite rubbed and bumped at edges with some marks, pages are very good. Jacket has some chipping, creasing and marks with fading to spine. Ink stains to reverse side. 146 pages, illustrated. Deer are an introduced species to New Zealand, the first of the Wapiti breed being released in wild, wet and rugged Fiordland. at the south-west extremity of the South Islands, in 1905. As the herd grew so did the expectations of deer stalkers ambitious to add a Wapiti head to their trophies. The author caught the hunting bug early and soon graduated from an air gun to a borrowed single barrel shotgun before up-gunning to a "ladies" single-shot 22 rifle while later came a 303 rifle and serious deer stalking could begin. At first this was in the hills and bush near his home at Upper Hutt. With an easy and enjoyable writing style the author covers his early hunting exploits before visiting Fiordland in search of the Wapiti. This was to become his favourite hunting ground, often spending several weeks in this wilderness area. Gradually he lost some of his zest for the hunt, moderating his kills and spending more time studying the wild environment and the creatures inhabiting it. This transition is recorded as well as his many experiences on the hunt, his thoughts on conservation, of maintaining the Wapiti herd when there were those who sought to exterminate it. His stalking recollections and viewpoints are of value and interest as they cover the period when deer stalking evolved dramatically --- for instance reaching the hunting ground with light aircraft replacing foot-slogging and the advent of professional deer hunting from helicopters. Ray Tinsley presents a well-rounded story of hunting while also expressing doubts about the future of the sport in NZ. ALL PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK. Wraps. Condition: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. vi, 100 pages. Illustrations (many in color). Volume 1 ONLY. This is the only one of the 11 volume report that was issued as unclassified. This report highlights the accomplishments of the Enhanced Surveillance Program (ESP), the highest-priority research and development in stockpile management. This is volume one of eleven, the unclassified summary of selected program highlights. These highlights fall into the following focus areas: pits, high explosives, organics, dynamics, diagnostics, systems, secondaries, materials-aging models, non-nuclear components, and surveillance testing systems. Each of these areas were documented in the other individual report volumes. Principal investigators from around the DOE complex contributed to this report. From an NNSA Enhanced Surveillance Program Plan: "Because nuclear weapons are being retained for timeframes beyond our experience and their design life, ES pursues a fundamental scientific understanding of stockpile aging and develops the models and technologies needed for early identification and assessment of stockpile aging concerns. The vision is to ensure a responsive capability by identifying aging issues with sufficient lead-time to ensure that NNSA has the necessary infrastructure capability and capacity in place when required. ES also provides assessments on the reused and new materials to be used in refurbished or replacement weapons to support age-aware design, manufacturing, and certification to increase longevity for a more sustainable stockpile. ES delivers new diagnostics and methods, including non-destructive techniques, to the Directed Stockpile Work (DSW) program for transforming surveillance to be more predictive in finding defects in weapons sampled from the stockpile.". George Kitrinos,Ray Marazzi, and Kitty Tinsley (illustrator).…
