Inscriptions to the front and rear in ink reference the publication of this work by Giunti. La…Coltivazione is a didactic poem written in imitation of Virgil's Georgics. Luigi Alamanni (sometimes spelt Alemanni) (1495-1556) was an Italian poet and statesman. He was regarded as a prolific and versatile poet. He was credited with introducing the epigram into Italian poetry. The Coltivazione was first published in Paris by Robert Estienne in 1546 by order of the king. This was Estienne's only publication in Italian and was widely regarded as his most artistic book. Directly following Alamanni s work on agricultural matters is a Georgic poem based on Virgil titled Le Api, or "the Bee," by Giovanni Rucellai. Pagination: [viii], 318pp. Signatures: *4, A-T in gatherings of 8, V in gathering of 4. Provenance: bookplate for Matthew Weld Hartstonge and Jacobi Manzoni to the front end papers. Matthew Weld Hartstonge was the Dublin-born eldest son of Edmund Weld and his wife Anne, widow of John Vesey; Edmund adopted Anne's maiden name, Hartstonge, on their marriage at St. Ann's, Dublin in 1771. Matthew graduated BA from Trinity College Dublin in 1792 and in 1795 was called to the Irish bar. He was a member of the Royal Dublin Society and corresponded extensively with both Scott and Maria Edgeworth; he assisted Scott by providing material for his Memoirs of Jonathan Swift. His only novel, The Eve of All-Hallows (1825), is dedicated to Scott. He died at Dublin on 18 July 1834 and is buried in the vaults under St. Ann's church, Dawson Street, Dublin. The first is Pietro Gherardi, who is also known as a translator of Aristotle. His poems are addressed to many prominent figures of the time including Francesco de' Medici, Pietro da Barga, Antoine Muret (who dedicated him in return a long poem ?Ad Petrum Gerardium'), Flaminio Nobili, and Tarquinia Molza, just to mention a few. The second poet is the philologist and humanist Roberto Titi, who was only 20 years old when he published his poems. He was involved in a fierce dispute with Scaliger and later obtained a professorship in Bologna. Titi ended his life in Pisa, where he was invited by Grand Duke Ferdinand. Among his poems there is one called Gephyromachia pisana (pp. 157-159), which is dedicated to the famous Gioco del Ponte (?Bridge Game') of Pisa (cf. M.I. Aliverti & M. Alderigi, Il Gioco del Ponte di Pisa: memoria e ricordo di una città, Pisa, 1980, p. 142, no. 9.1). The present is one of the few editions signed by Carlo Pettinari, a printer from Bologna who worked in Florence either on his own or in partnership with the heirs of Lorenzo Torrentino.Edit 16, CNCE20813; USTC, 832532; Adams, G-567.
