Translated by Thomas B…eddoes, the Swedish chemist " published his important tables of chemical reactions and advanced a simplified version of Macquer's classification of types of reactions. Tobern Bergman published his table of chemical affinities and his accompanying 90-page Latin Dissertation of Elective Attractions in 1775, approximately three-quarters of a century before Dmitri Mendeleev and Lothar Meyer published their periodic tables of the chemical elements. Bergman put himself to this enormous task [of classifying chemical affinities] and produced. the most elaborate affinity table so far, comprising 50 columns and constructed for two different analytical methods: dry and wet ways. Bergman s table represented a giant stride in chemists capacity for analytic control. It listed 25 separate acids, 15 earths, and 16 metallic calces. Translated into French, German, and English, it won immediate recognition from the European chemical community, which indicates that the affinity table had a secure place in contemporary chemical theorizing (Kim, Affinity, that Elusive Dream: A Genealogy of the Chemical Revolution. He received the Israel Prize (1960), Corday-Morgan Medal and Prize (1961) and became a Fellow of the Royal Society (1967). Sondheimer moved to Harvard in 1948, to join Woodward's group in their project on steroid synthesis. He next moved, early in 1952, to Syntex in Mexico City to succeed Carl Djerassi as head of research. During his four year stay he helped create short direct routes to cortisone, and to all of the major sex hormones. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there and was much loved and respected. Sondheimer moved to Harvard in 1948, to join Woodward's group in their project on steroid synthesis. He next moved, early in 1952, to Syntex in Mexico City to succeed Carl Djerassi as head of research. During his four year stay he helped create short direct routes to cortisone, and to all of the major sex hormones. He thoroughly enjoyed his time there and was much loved and respected. In 1963 he accepted, and then rejected, the offer of a prestigious professorship at the University of Chicago, accepting instead one of the newly created Royal Society Research Professorships at the University of Cambridge. He had considerable freedom, set up a large international group, and was made a Fellow of Churchill College. Nonetheless, he was not happy at Cambridge and transferred in 1967 to University College London. In May of that year he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. His membership citation read: Professor Sondheimer is distinguished for his work on the total synthesis of a range of natural products, the partial synthesis of steroid hormones and analogues, and especially for his syntheses of the hitherto unknown class of conjugated unsaturated macrocyclic compounds which has led to some interesting theoretical conclusions. On these topics he has so far published 167 papers.

Torbern Olof Bergman (1735-1784) was an important Swedish chemist and mineralogist was the first to distinguish between organic and inorganic substances. Bergman's most important chemical contribution was his Essay on Elective Attractions, a study of chemical affinity. His other writings covered many subjects but are all related to some aspect of science, most particularly chemistry and mineralogy. For example, in 1761 he was the first to discover the planet Venus had an atmosphere. In chemistry, Bergman is considered the father of quantitative analysis, physical chemistry, modern chemical nomenclature, the concept of equivalent weights, and the electromotive series, and is the discoverer or made major contributions to the discovery of at least eight chemical elements: platinum, molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cobalt, nickel, oxygen, and barium. In crystallography he has been considered a forerunner of Haüy in founding the science. He wrote the first great treatise in physical geography, and he contributed substantially to our modern philosophy of science. The uranium mineral torbernite, the asteroid (29307) Torbernbergman and the crater Bergman on the moon are named after him.
