"Since the inception of photography, in the early nineteenth century, architecture has been a primary subject for photographers. One inherent ideological problem in this long-standing relationship is the definition of whether architectural photography should be defined as Art or as simply a commercial endeavor. In his 1963 book Architecture & Photography, by photographer Eric de Maré, he addressed this fine line and established two distinct photographic categories: as the Picture and the Illustration. The Picture is the architectonic design which is not concerned at all with the record but attempts to create a work of visual art in its own right. The subject may, or may not, have architectural value in itself; it is the picture which matters. The Illustration presents the building in as attractive and revealing a way as possible so that we say in the same breath, what a splendid photograph and what a beautiful building! To the professional architectural photographer, that is his living. De Maré created a typological framework for indexing an array of works, from Margaret Bourke-Whites as Picture in style to Julius Shulmans as Illustration. The past commercial endeavors of architectural photographers such as Shulman have, in recent years, been elevated to the realm of art by scholars, auction houses and art collectors (as cultural artifacts that showcased the mid-century modern aesthetic in Southern California architecture and the intended life style that went along with it), while his vast body of work is still, categorically, Illustration in style. Although many noted photographers have explored blurring these categorical frameworks, de Marés typologies are still a viable methodology for defining photography that portrays architecture as its primary subject matter. Judith Turners cropped perspectival photographic views of buildings operated in the realm of Illustration style. Turners photographic series taken in the late 1970s of buildings by the New York Five (Peter D. Eisenman, Charles Gwathmey, John Hejduk, Michael Graves, and Richard Meier).
