Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Photographs and drawings (illustrator). The wonderful, exhilarating era of live entertainment in America comes back in On with the Show. By focusing on what happened onstage, backstage, and in the audience, Robert Toll reveals much about ordinary Americans of that day. The book is filled with spell-binding anecdotes about the great names of show business, from Houdini to Al Jolson, from Buffalo Bill Cody to Fanny Brice. Not everyone knows that: . P. T. Barnum, who almost single-handedly created American show business, including the term itself, did little more for the circus than lend his by-then magical name to it. . Gypsy Rose Lee made burlesque famous but took off less than other less famous strippers. . Flo Ziegfeld never thought W. C. Fields was funny, even when he was convulsing Follies audiences. . The father of American tap-dancing was a black minstrel known professionally as Juba. . Some of the most beautiful women on the American stage early in this century were men, and these female impersonators were not only considered family entertainment, they were among the most highly paid stars in vaudeville. But On with the Show is more than the sum of anecdotes and pictures; it is a new kind of show business book. Toll shapes it into a history of the development of popular taste by explaining how average Americans molded stage entertainment to satisfy their needs, desires, and dreams. The people who crammed in to see the circuses, popular plays, minstrel shows, musical comedies, burlesque shows, and vaudeville were passionate participants in the shows. They hollered, hissed, sang along, even fought for their preferences. And they were fiercely patriotic. When in 1849 the celebrated American classical actor Edwin Forrest performed Hamlet on the same evening as Englishman William C. Macready, the result was the infamous Astor Place riot in which 150 people were injured and 31 were killed. Out of the rollicking give-and-take between rowdy patrons and ambitious performers show business took root and ultimately blossomed into a dazzling array of forms, features, and stars that equalled anything available to the world's richest potentates. By explaining why show business took the forms it did when it did. Toll helps us to understand ordinary Americans of the past. "Educational as well as entertaining" the barkers used to shout to entice patrons into their emporiums and their pitch is just as apt for On with the Show. Two minor tape repair to small dust jacket tears. Book corners bumped.A heavy book will require extra postage. All orders shipped protected in a box. Book.
