Gallon writes on December 5 1899 to a fan who seeks his autograph: My dear friend - For so I am sure I should call you after your very friendly letter to me; I hasten to reply to it. Speaking generally, I do not reply to any requests for my autograph; speaking particularly, I cannot refuse such an appeal as yours. After all, the man who puts his pen to paper in some poor attempt to write what is in him must feel in the first place that all his readers are his friends; they are but children of a larger growth sitting in the firelight with the old cry upon their lips - "Tell me a story, please!" And if it is not the story they like, they will go to bed dissatisfied and will not listen to him any more. But, whatever value the Press or the big bulk of the public put upon one's work, it is very, very good to feel that, here and there, someone has loved your characters, or hated them, wept with them or laughed with them - just as you have done yourself. And for that I thank you - for that I sign myself: Your sincere friend, Tom Gallon. Tom Gallon 1866-1914 was a British playwright and novelist. He was the brother of author and publicist Nellie Tom-Gallon, who founded the Tom-Gallon Trust Award for beginning writers in memory of her brother. After his death, his sister, Nellie, founded the Tom Gallon Trust Award to encourage new short story writers - and it is still presented today under the auspices of The Society of Authors. Size is 180mm x 115mm. Condition is average. Light folding creasing. Age toning to edges. More images can be taken upon request. Ref16935. Signed by Author(s).
