Pictorial dust jacket reproduces a detail of Cramer's mosaic-like painting in blues and violets, orange rear panel. Now in an archival quality (removable) Brodart cover. Catalog for the exhibition held at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art, University of Oregon, August 17 to December 29, 2019, and the first museum survey of Cramer's career. Cramer (b. 1960), a third-generation Portlander, graduated from Pacific Northwest College of Art in 1982, studied at Pratt Institute, and worked in the East Village art scene before returning to Portland, where he became known for murals, art cars, and carved wood-relief paintings finished in gold and metallic leaf. Work held by the Portland Art Museum, Hallie Ford Museum of Art, Boise Art Museum, Microsoft, and Saks Fifth Avenue, among others. Speer, art critic for Willamette Week from 2002 to 2015 and author of monographs on Peter Halley, George Dunbar, and Sam Francis, contributes the catalog essay tracing Cramer's progression from drawing through painting into sculptural relief. This was the first exhibition to show the drawings alongside the reliefs, and the catalog remains the only monograph devoted to the artist. WorldCat records just three institutional holdings. Contents: Foreword and Acknowledgments, Jill Hartz; Collecting Cramer, Jordan D. Schnitzer; Introduction, Danielle Knapp; Journey to the Third Dimension: Tom Cramer Drawings and Paintings 1974-2019, Richard Speer; Exhibition Checklist, Part 1 Faces, Flowers, and Fractals, Part 2 Sinuous Lines, Organic Rapture, Part 3 Delineation and Explosion. Signed by Illustrator.
