The rear end paper is mostly lacking but a good copy on an early children's scientific book.

Full calf with the front board detached but present. Illustrated with 5 copperplates including a fine frontis. depicting an observatory on a hill at night. Woodcuts to the text. A very crisp text block of an early childrens science book. Morocco label present but safely loosely enclosed within the text block. The bookplate of Esther Acklom with a gift inscription to her at the head of the reverse of the frontis. Given by The Rev. Ingram 1797. Esther Acklom of Wiseton Hall married the Viscount Althorp who became the third Earl Spencer.

Original green roan-backed buff boards, paper spine label partly chipped but the title, including "Price 2s" intelligible. Front free endpaper inscribed "The Gift of John Gifford Croker to William Creed 1814." The third edition, not so stated, in which the Darton firm had a share; the Darton firm also printed this edition. The Dartons first participation in this lucrative project was the 1798 edition; the work was first published by Newbery in 1761. The 1798 edition was criticized for passages containing "the equalizing spirit of the New Philosophy," and that spirit was further emphasized in revisions in an edition of 1806, here reprinted: Mr. Loiter "draws his large income from trafficking in Negroes, without feeling repugnance at separating husband and wife, parents and children." His wife, "on the other hand, passes her time in feeding parrots, cats, and monkeys, while she abandons her own offspring to the care of a hireling." The Dartons G928(3).

The binding shows wear and bumping but is sound with rubbed but secure hinges. Headcap of the spine is chipped. Small wormhole near the foot of the spine. Complete with endpapers and illustrated with 5 full-page copperplate engravings (collates complete) as well as several smaller text woodcuts. Early owner's signature on the recto of the frontis reads, "Solomon Mordecai / Warrenton [North Carolina] Jan.y. 1st 1804." Another early signature for "Jos. Mordecai" is at the top of the title page. The Mordecai family was an important Jewish family in eastern North Carolina in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Jacob Mordecai founded the Warrenton Female Academy in 1809 and was assisted by his son Solomon and several daughters. This title was first published in 1761 by John Newbery in England (thought to have actually be written by Oliver Goldsmith) under the pseudonym of Tom Telescope. It was a science book written for youth. This is the First American edition. The Second American edition of 1808 is much more common. The "Teacher of Philadelphia" referred to on the title page is believed to have been Robert Patterson, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. This is a decent, sturdy copy of a rare and important edition.
