Condition: Very good. First Edition. First edition thus, from York publisher J. Kendrew, of the story of a little boy learning to read with the help of a molded alphabet book made of gingerbread. A book made of gingerbread is the ultimate in ephemeral publications. Gingerbread hornbooks were "a time-honored way of encouraging literacy in early modern England," and are the central mode of how little GILES GINGERBREAD learns his ABCs in this charming chapbook (Immel). According to THE OSBORNE COLLECTION OF EARLY CHILDREN'S BOOKS, this is "an abridged chapbook version" of a title originally published around 1765, likely authored by John Newbery writing under a pseudonym (314). "Very few copies of any British edition of GILES GINGERBREAD survive," notes Andrea Immel in a blog post for the COTSEN CHILDREN'S LIBRARY, "having been read (not eaten) to pieces." This is confirmed by OCLC, which locates only one holding of this Kendrew edition, printed in York. An attractive copy of a sweet work. 4'' x 2.5''. Original orange wrappers, saddle-stitched. Woodcut frontispiece with 11 in-text woodcut illustrations. 32 pages. Rear wrapper with tiny pencil marks to margins. Wrapper with mild edgewear, a couple tiny places of loss to spine. Leaves with a few small spots of soil to margins. Sound and clean overall.
