Als er in der Lagerkuche Kartoffeln schalt, erfahrt er von einer Gruppe von Jungen, die zur Abfahrt aus dem Lager bereitstehen. Ohne nachzudenken, schliesst er sich…ihnen an, wird jedoch von einem SS-Mann in eine kleinere Gruppe sortiert. In einem impulsiven Moment lauft er unbemerkt auf die andere Seite und wird mit den ausgewahlten Burschen zum Zug gefuhrt. Wahrend alles schnell geschieht, kann ihm sein Freund nur ein Stuck Brot bringen, bevor sie sich trennen. Der Autor reflektiert oft uber diese Entscheidung: Hat er sein Leben gerettet oder nicht? Obwohl er uberlebt, ist sein Zustand katastrophal, wahrend die, die in Birkenau blieben, das Kriegsende in besserer Verfassung erlebten - jedoch nur die Halfte von ihnen. Diese Gedanken fuhren ihn zu der Erkenntnis, dass man nie sicher sein kann, ob eine Entscheidung richtig oder weise ist. Der Autor, Toman Brod, geboren 1929 in Prag, war wahrend der Besatzung in Konzentrationslagern inhaftiert. Nach dem Krieg wurde er Historiker und widmete sich der nationalsozialistischen Politik und dem tschechoslowakischen Widerstand. Sein bedeutendstes Werk behandelt den Weg der Tschechoslowakei in die sowjetische Abhangigkeit.
