Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: very good, University of Vienna (Anglistics/ American Studies), course: Journalism and Fiction in the United States, language: English, abstract: This paper deals with the relationship between fiction and traditional and New Journalism. I have taken Norman Mailer s novel 'The Naked and the Dead' as an example of fiction influenced by New Journalism and my paper intents to show the relationship on the basis of this novel and other contemporary texts. The first chapter deals briefly with the author s motivation to write the novel and more extensively with the referential material used, referring partly to the author s own experience and to the existence of derived material, which has to be taken into account as well. The next chapter states the parts the novel consists of and gives a brief analysis of how structure and point of view work in the novel. The main focus of the paper is the next chapter: Norman Mailer and New Journalism. After a definition of 'traditional' and 'New Journalism' these terms are brought into relation with Mailer s novel with regard to the most eminent features: perspective, details and language. The last chapter features the narrative techniques Mailer employed and how these techniques provide the reader with closer insights into the novel s characters and events.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: Good, University of Vienna (Anglistics/American Studies), course: The Image of German Speaking Countries in American Texts from 1860 to 1930, language: English, abstract: The first chapter of this paper presents a survey of Henry James' biography. Special emphasis is given to his experiences in Germany. The reader has to take into consideration that especially his early experiences in relation with Germany shaped his attitude and influenced his image of the country throughout his life. The second chapter gives a brief overview of the historical events that lead to the German unification and the political situation of Germany shortly after the unification, the time, when Henry James visited the country. The presentation of the historical background will help the reader to understand the allusions made in Henry James' travel sketches Homburg Reformed and Darmstadt. The third chapter presents the American opinion of the unification and establishes a connection between Henry James' view and the public opinion, as Henry James' opinion in that matter generally corresponded to the public opinion in America. The fourth chapter explains the background of the two travel sketches followed by a detailed analysis of the texts. The analysis focuses on Henry James' image of Germany and his allusions on the unification. Statements of his letters and his autobiography and comparisons to contemporary travel literature constituted further points of reference for the analysis.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: Good, University of Vienna (Anglistics-American Studies), 135 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: When during the 1980s short novels like Jay McInerney's 'Bright Lights, Big City' (1984), Bret Easton Ellis' 'Less Than Zero' (1985), Tama Janowitz' 'Slaves of New York' (1986) or Michael Chabon's 'The Mysteries of Pittsburgh' (1988) became talked-about bestsellers in short succession, conservative critics were shocked. Their rejection of these novels was mainly grounded in the discrepancy between the expectations of traditional literary criticism and the new forms of expression these young authors used. The referential matrices of their novels are loaded with signs and codes of their decade; images and fictions spread by mass media have become a fixed part in the world of those novels. Traditional critics considered such references trite and superficial. It cannot be ignored, however, that popular culture found its way into contemporary literature and critics will have to get accustomed to the fact that in contemporary literature the referential horizon, which once was formed by the Bible, classical antiquity and the great works of world literature, is increasingly provided by popular culture as disseminated by the mass media. The fact that these authors were all very young and that they were presented and celebrated like pop stars was, for many critics, proof that pop industry had finally taken over the literary market and that authors would no longer be measured by their achievements as writers but by their celebrity status determined by media-coverage. They felt the end of serious literature was near. On the other hand, there were reviewers, whose praise of those novels and their authors was just as undifferentiated as their denunciations by other.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Diploma Thesis from the year 2001 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: Good, University of Vienna (Anglistics-American Studies), language: English, abstract: When during the 1980s short novels like Jay McInerney's 'Bright Lights, Big City' (1984), Bret Easton Ellis' 'Less Than Zero' (1985), Tama Janowitz' 'Slaves of New York' (1986) or Michael Chabon's 'The Mysteries of Pittsburgh' (1988) became talked-about bestsellers in short succession, conservative critics were shocked. On the other hand, there were reviewers, whose praise of those novels and their authors was just as undifferentiated as their denunciations by others. Fashionable terms, from 'MTV novels' to 'yuppie literature', were attached to the novels, and they were glorified as highly accomplished expressions of a changed Zeitgeist'. Despite the great amount of media attention, most of the novels have rarely been closely examined. The two novels 'Bright Lights, Big City' and 'Less Than Zero' will be the focus of this thesis and subject of closer investigation, because they were treated as the representative novels for the whole group. A broad approach to their subject matter will be chosen in order to do justice to the numerous culture-bound implications they contain.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 164 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 32 pp. Deutsch.
