Dust Jacket Condition: Jacket is very good. Illustrated with hieroglyphs drawn by the translator and with paintings from Egyptian tombs by Nina M. Davies (illustrator). First edition. Romantic, idyllic, humorous, even satirical, sometimes naive, almost always graceful, these songs from the time of the last great pharaohs of Egypt preserve a picture of daily life of the New Kingdom, the last great flourishing of ancient Egyptian civilization. These ancient verses sing as poetry to the modern ear, and the translations are faithful to the spirit and idiom of the originals. Wearing the mantle of scholarship lightly, the poems re-create pe0ple of flesh and blood out of the distant past. A few foxed spots along top edge of text block. Previous owner's bookplate of free front endpaper, which might have been the cause of a slight rippling of the page. Otherwise, tight, clean and very good. Small 4to. 9-11/16" x 7-1/8". Blind stamped grey cloth covered boards. Silver stamped spine. 120 pp.

The author traces the practice back to its roots in the early church, exploring the arguments for and against infant baptism throughout Christianity's development. The book provides a detailed analysis of the scriptural basis for infant baptism, examining key passages and their interpretation over time. It also delves into the historical development of the practice, from its early acceptance to the Reformation and beyond, discussing the role of tradition, church authority, and personal belief. The author presents a comprehensive overview of the theological issues at stake, including the nature of faith, the role of the sacraments, and the relationship between baptism and salvation. It examines the different perspectives on infant baptism held by various Christian denominations, highlighting both common ground and points of divergence. This book offers a valuable contribution to the understanding of infant baptism, providing a thorough examination of its historical, biblical, and theological foundations. By exploring the complex arguments surrounding this issue, the author sheds light on the significance of baptism in Christian faith and practice. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Oblong 8vo. pp. 83. Original grey cloth-backed marbled boards lettered white on spine. Bookplate of John Lewis. Presentation copy: 'A close friend is a rare and difficult thing to find. Surely I have been blessed with more than my fair share, having left one in Canada and gained two in England. In the short time spent at Meadow Cottage I have come to hold an affection for it. for the character only an old home has, for its vast collection of books, pottery and paintings, its squirrels and "Peeping Tits". but even greater is my affection and fondness for my dear friends there. and what is a friend? I will tell you. A friend is someone with whom I dare to be myself. With much love, Sue Christmas 1974.' The amusing content is part collage, and part hand coloured drawings with handwritten and printed text. The U.N.C.O.U.T.H. Handbook, supposedly written by Thomas Wilfred Ibsley Titlington, the official spokesman, provides a guide to the organisation, with examples of uncouth letters, envelopes and a dictionary. Tombs produced the book for John Lewis (1912 Ð 1996), typographer, book designer, author and illustrator and his wife Griselda, writer, designer and ceramics collector known for her classic book, 'A Collector's History of English Pottery'. There were other books by Sue Tombs in the John Lewis collection and it seems she published them in very small numbers, in this case just one copy. It hardly needs saying it is a unique item. A unicum. A little rubbed at head and foot of spine and corners, otherwise very good. Slight rubbing, otherwise very good. Signedes.
