Mediante un decreto de Augusto, recibe la fatal orden por la que se le destierra a Tomis (la actual Constanza rumana), en la nación de los getas, a orillas del mar Negro. Ovidio estaba en su momento de máximo esplendor literario, reconocido por sus coetáneos como el mejor poeta vivo, y después de haber glorificado a Julio César y divinizado como Júpiter al propio Augusto en sus todavía inacabadas Metamorfosis.
