Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. A beautifully produced concertina-folding album (orihon) in its original gold cloth covered boards, subtly decorated with Japanese maple leaves, with illustrated red paper title panel to the front 18x25cm. This contains 13 original colour woodblock prints including the title page and prints consecutively numbered 1-12. Each measures 355x245mm, centre-folded, and captioned in red in English and Japanese. The covers are good only, fraying with some loss along the edges. The interiors are generally very good, yellowing slightly with some spotting, dusting to the title page especially, occasional creasing, and a couple of small dents to the surface of plate no. 9. This was issued to promote the Mitsukoshi department store. It had been founded as Echigo-ya in Tokyo in 1673, selling kimono door to door. Ten years later, it took the innovative approach of opening a shop that people could visit. It changed its name to Mitsui Gofuku in 1893, then to Mitsukoshi in 1904. Although no edition is stated, this was first issued c1893 captioned with the Mitsui name, then reissued in this form with the new name. The works are credited to the Meiji period Ukiyo-e artist Mizuno Toshikata (1866-1908), who had been commissioned to prepare prints displaying Mitsui's / Mitsukoshi's fashions for each season. The title page features an open book with the main titles in Japanese, and a basket containing several flower varieties. Prints 1-12 feature very elegantly styled women and girls in seasonal dress, in diverse domestic or exterior settings in and around Tokyo. Of these, 2 are themed for Spring (1-2), 3 for Summer (3-5), 4 for Autumn (6-9), and 3 for Winter (10-12). They are captioned as follows: 1. Spring - 'Parting of school chums' // 2. Spring - 'An outing in a field' // 3. Summer - 'Keeping off cloth-moths' // 4. Summer - 'A cool breeze of evening' // 5. Summer - 'An evening blossom of Yakaiso (ball flower)' // 6. Autumn - 'Sketching out-door' // 7. Autumn - 'On a look out for a new season dress at Mitsukoshi Co.' // 8. Autumn - 'A walk to a country cottage' // 9. Autumn - 'A bright tint of maple foliage' // 10. Winter - 'A visit from a neighbor's petty favorite' // 11. Winter - 'A snowy morning' // 12. Winter - 'A walk with a pet dog'. (References: Some individual prints from the Mitsui edition can be seen on the Ukiyo-e online database, and from this edition on the Smithsonian's Asian Art Museum website as part of the Muller Collection).

Condition: very good. Akiyama Buemon 1894 Woodcut triptych 33x70cm, the three sheets joined and laid down. A bit marked and grubby. This is the first time, as far as I know, that war artists and journalists became stars of senso-e: war prints. I can't read the names of the two artists portrayed here but of course the best war artists never went near a war. I found no suggestion that Toshikata ever left his studio.
[Japan no date, circa 1900]. Single color woodblock Kuchi-e print, 22.4 x 30.8 cm.,very clean nice example, artist's red cinnabar Hanko [seal], with rare silver pigment & grafrage, 2 original folds, large example. RARE FIRST & ONLY EDITION . *** **** *** . . A SUPERB AND STUNNING VIEW OF A MEIJI BEAUTY . * THE ARTIST: MIZUNO Toshikata [1866-1908]: He was a pupil of the eminent and most famous Taiso Yoshitoshi and later Watanabe Seitei who taught him Kacho [bird & flower] drawing. He used the "Go" [studio names] Osai and Shosetsu. . Per Stephens, in the ".early 1880's Toshikata began to contribute illustrations to newspapers .& magazines. He eventually became recognized as a premier illustrator.he would gradually move away from his work .to concentrate on his own painting.his individual prints. better known in the West for his reportage of the personalities ad events revolving around the Sino-Japanese war[1895]." This period stimulated a revival in woodblock printmaking. He was also many elegant Bijin [beautiful] women's portraits of the epoch, the turn-of-the century through circa 1905-06. . *** THE TENDER PASTEL COLORS & SPECIAL PRINTING TECHNIQUES: . The colors are pastels, tenderly applied, with two locations of the use of the very rare silver pigment in her fan and again in her Obi [sash]. There is some very rare gauffrage [blind embossing] in her flowing open Kimono which can only be seen by scrutinizing the print carefully. These two rare techniques are seldom found in prints of this period. It takes great technical skill to use the silver pigment which is heavy and difficult to apply and make stick. The gauffrag technique requires no pigment and is vigorously rubbed from the verso with a Baren [an embossing tool used in woodblock printing], with much pressure to impress the paper with nothing buy the impression.subtle to say the least. . *** THE SUBJECT: This is a wistful perspective on a beauty taking rest on the balcony or verandah on a warm spring day, note the blossoming flowers in the background. She holds a fan in her right hand and has left her outer cover Kimono open and flowing to allow the air to cool her. The bamboo screen in the background is rotating against the wind, indicating a fresh breeze is blowing, her Kimono has caught the wind and is flowing with the away from the wind. . The artists' Hanko [seal/chop] is in the lower left corner, in red cinnabar oval with his two Kanji characters: "Toshi Kata." . *** CONDITION: As usual this Kuchi-e was removed from a magazine or book, as typical, it has the expected 2 folds; the lower appears as a line from the front, the upper is invisible. . The verso [back side] is clean, the print is free from stain, or other distractions. See Merritt below on Kuchi-e details and examples. . *** NOTE: Color scans are posted to our website. . *** REFERENCES: .
