Rare first edition.This work contains documents of the negotiations between Emperor Kangxi and Father Tournon's legation to settle the Chinese Rites Controversy. It's part of the Acta Pekinensia, a…Latin manuscript preserved in the Jesuit Roman Archives, compiled by Father Kilian Stumpf (1655-1720).He was the first papal legate sent to the imperial court of China, on behalf of Pope Clement XI. Tournon was born in Turin in 1668 into a noble family from Savoy and died in confinement at Macau in 1710. Tournon and his party sailed by way of Pondicherry, Manila and Canton, arriving in Peking in December 1705. Emperor Kangxi intially received him kindly, but when he realised that Tournon had come to condemn the Chinese rites and Confucian rituals (the Nanking Decree), he had Tournon imprisoned in Macau where he later died, shortly after being informed that he had been created cardinal on August 1, 1707. The German Jesuit Kilian Stumpf (1655-1720) lived in Beijing from 1695 till his death in 1720, and among other important offices, was Apostolic Notary in charge of the annual report from the Jesuit mission in China to the Superior General, particularly during the Chinese Rites Controversy and the apostolic visitation of the papal legate Charles-Thomas Maillard de Tournon to China (1705-1710).The Acta Pekinensia (Facts from Beijing) report in 1,400 pages the events of the years 1705 to 1712 of the Tournon legation. The huge manuscript is based on letters and reports by vrious missionaries, on eyewitnesses? reports, on Stumpf?s own observations, on sources from the Jesuit archives in Beijing, and on Chinese and Manchu sources from the Palace Archives. The Jesuits had planned to have the Acta Pekinensia printed, but did not succeed.An international team has been formed to bring this Project to realization.
