First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Condition: Fair-Good. Bound in calfskin, red title label and black volume spine labels stamped in gilt. 4 volumes. With frontispiece illustrations, and 1 interior full-page woodcut per volume. This edition, Vol. 29 of Bradford and Conrad's Select British Classics, comprises the complete print run of the eponymous London weekly newspaper, which ran from 1754-56, which was published as a "plebeian" counterpoint to the aristocratic "The World," which ran at about the same time. The books are in fair-good condition. The covers and spines show wear, most conspicously at the edges, and the cover corners are bowed, but the bindings are still tight, with no splits or separation. Volume 3 has an irregularly shaped divot on the front cover. The pastedowns and endpages are stained, and 2 of the 4 volumes' pastedowns have ink scribbles on them. The text of Vol. I is moderately foxed, but the other volumes are much cleaner, with minimal age toning. One of the first British humor and parody publications, predating Punch by nearly a century, full sets of this edition are very hard to find. This particular set is the ex-library set of James Pemberton Morris at the historic Bolton mansion, each volume bearing his bookplate; Morris, a gentleman farmer and friend of Dolley Madison, was organizer and later president of the Pennsylvania Abolition Society. A unique set of this rare publication. In uncertain economic times, invest your hard-earned money in items of lasting value you can hold in hand and enjoy.
