MacLean, a unique proof copy with annotations and corrections by the author. A very scarce short story from the weekly periodical 'The Boys' Friend,' which ran from 1895 to 1927 and published one thousand seven hundred and seventeen issues.A popular boy story paper comprised of many adventure stories and serials including Nelson Lee, Sexton Blake, Ferrers Lord.An undated copy, dated from No. 571 in the series c1921. This story if from No. 581, 'The Red Fighter' by Eric W. Townsend, pseudonym for Eric W. MacLean.A uniquely annotated copy with many corrections by the author. Inscribed 'but to approx 45,000 words' and 'all second serial and book rights available' to the front pastedown, indicating the author was preparing for a book or a serial publication of this work following this printed appearance in 'The Boy's Friend'. The author has shortened the work, and has given it to his literary agent hence the c/o Mr John Farquharson to the front pastedown.The corrections involve the removal of many terms and some changes, for example 'from which' instead of 'that many' to page 3 and 'Royal CANADIAN Mounted Police' to page 7. Other corrections regard grammatical amendments. In a full cloth binding. Externally smart with some shelf wear and some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. The cloth is slightly rubbed on the front board and marked on the rear, faintly. With inscriptions on the front pastedown 'but to approx. 45.000 words. All second serial and book rights available,' undated. Internally, firmly bound. The first page of text is slightly chipped at the top margin. With some browning to the pages. Annotated with corrections throughout. Very Good. book.
