Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition ( 'First published in 1957 by Routledge & Kegan Paul'). Signed and inscribed by the author, Peter Townsend, on a small piece of paper (that has the exact coloring as the underlying paper, see photo) affixed at the top corner of the blank first front end paper. So, while I was getting over the fact that this Peter Townsend did not have an affair with Princess Margaret (as far as we know), I did discover an interesting back story on the inscription, interesting perhaps to English sociologists in particular. I was struggling to make out the last name of the inscribee when I noticed on the next page a reference to a Peter Marris. And that cinched it. The inscription reads: 'Peter Marris, for all you did, affectionately, Peter Townsend, Oct. 1957.' This book was part of the Reports of The Institute of Community Studies. Three books are referenced under that heading on the page facing the title page. One is this book. Another is Family and Kinship in East London by Michael Young and Peter Wilmott, and the third is Widows and Their Families by Peter Marris. When I googled the two Peters names together it brought up an obituary that Peter Townsend had written for Peter Marris in the Guardian, and also a piece by a Gareth Williams from Cardiff University, a part of which I quote here: 'Peter Marris died on 25th June 2007 at the age of 79. He first came to prominence as one of the group of sociologists, headed by the late Michael Young (later Lord Young of Dartington) who formed the now legendary Institute of Community Studies in the East End of London. This group produced sociological classics such as Peter Wilmott and Michael Young's Family and Kinship in East London (1957), and Peter Townsend's The Family Life of Old People (1957), with their deceptively simple coalescence of social arithmetic and qualitative accounts. Marris's own contribution to the work of that period, Widows and their Families (1958), was also an important study, but probably less well known. The Institute, now The Young Foundation, continues its work on 'social action and research', recently publishing The New East End, a portrait of the dramatically changed streets and homes of Tower Hamlets.' An interesting Association copy. Curious that the book found its way to the United States. I wonder if it was among the books I purchased that came from the estate of the late American sociologist, Daniel Bell. That would make sense. The book is in pretty nice shape. The spine is slightly faded and has a light circular stain near the bottom edge. The gilt lettering on the spine is still pretty bright. The edges and corners are in very good shape. The book has a solid feel to it and is solidly bound from cover to cover. The pages are lightly and uniformly toned. They are also exceptionally clean. Scrolling through I'm not seeing any soiling at all. Same goes for creasing, not seeing any. There are no markings. No attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. Inscribed by Author(s).
