Pp. 333-440, with printed contents leaf, rear wrapper advertisement for Bentley's Standard Novels and Romances, and attached inserted abolitionist prospectus for the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa. This April 1840 number of Bentley's Miscellany includes an attached insert, a contemporary Abolitionist Prospectus for the Society for the Extinction of the Slave Trade and for the Civilization of Africa, instituted June 1839, with Thomas Fowell Buxton named as chairman. The prospectus calls for renewed public effort against the continuing African slave trade, refers to the Society's planned public meeting at Exeter Hall, lists subscribers and their donations, and advertises Buxton's The African Slave Trade, and Its Remedy. The provisional committee includes prominent political, religious, and reform figures, including S. Lushington, Sir Robert Harry Inglis, Lord Ashley, T. B. Macaulay, Samuel Gurney, Thomas Sturge, and others. One leaf remains uncut, unopened. This issue's contents include a monthly installment of "Guy Fawkes: An Historical Romance," here Book the First, chapters VII-IX (the fourth installment), "The Star Chamber," "Doctor Dee," and "The Plot." Also includes contributions by Thomas Ingoldsby, Charles Hooton, Captain Medwin, Dalton, J. A. Wade, Alfred Crowquill, and others. Contents generally clean with light toning, marginal wear, and occasional chips. Prospectus clean and bright with an unopened leaf. A fragile but compelling original monthly part, with a contemporary abolitionist insert. Spine/backstrip worn and partly perished, though remaining stitched and holding. Original wrappers lightly toned, worn with marginal closed tears, chipping, creasing; front wrapper detached, though present; rear wrapper with red staining at the upper outer corner. Housed in mylar sleeve. A notable survival bringing together early Victorian literary serialization, Cruikshank illustrations, and contemporary British abolitionist activity.
