The boards are flat, quite clean, a little loose with collapsed hollow and with mark from a previous sticker to rear. The rear end papers are very lightly tanned;… the front end papers have library stamps and booking sheet and evidence of torn-out stickers etc. The text block is firm and clean and with slight warp. With attractive Knowles title page and frontispiece. Not annotated. No further library stamps. Good plus condition. Without jacket.

Internally fine, SAVE FOR a previous reader having entered the conventional 61 section divisions, in Roman numerals, into the margins of 'Catiline's Conspi…racy'. The page block shows expected ageing (the edges are marbled, and now a little dulled). Rebound in quarter leather with marbled paper sides, fine gilt titling to the banded spine. The boards remain clean and secure, with minor shelf-rubbing and marking. Pages tight and secure. A 'Life of Sallust' (by 'T.M.') precedes the Murphy translations. A handsome and collectible first edition. Frontis, xxv, 436pp. ('The Life of Sallust' (by T.M.) / 'Catiline's Conspiracy' / 'The Orations of Cicero Against Catiline' / 'The War Against Jugurtha'.).
