Red Cloth. Condition: VERY GOOD ( AVERAGE). Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine (ABOVE AVERAGE). New Impression of the1889 1st Edition. With the opening of the Trans-Caspian railway from the Caspian to Samarkand in May 1888, it was possible to travels through the Central Asian dominions of the Czar of Russia, and this book is a rec…ord of the journey which Lord Curzon made in September and October of that year. The author describes in exciting detail, a region long famed for its physical remoteness and impenetrability but which was becoming at the end of the 19th-century the theatre of imperial diplomacy and the threshold for international war. Written from the viewpoint of an English politician, this work also examines the intricacies of the Anglo Russian question at a time when British imperialism in India and alleged Russian expansionist policies threatened a clash of interests. Lord Curzon traveled widely in Russia and the East in the years before he became Viceroy of India in 1899 and later Foreign Secretary in 1919 and wrote very many accounts of his journeys as articles in leading English newspapers. Russia in Central Asia had its nucleus in such a series of articles but was revised by its author to make an enthralling narrative of a transcontinental train journey through little explored terrain, and at the same time a serious study of Russia as she appeared to an Englishman at the end of the 19th century. 477pp including Index 2 maps and numerous illustrations. Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition. 8vo. 8 1/2" x 9" Art-Deco color, printed wrappers, folds to 4 1/4" x 9," 24 pp. (including covers), color-printed throughout, with 11 double-page color-illustrated pictorial maps, lettering printed in red, blue & white. From the library of David H. Kenyon (1918-2011) former Lockheed engineer & military sales manag…er, as well as aviation consultant for Pan American, TWA, and the Venezuelan Airlines, and later President of the Southern California Wing of the OX5 Aviation Pioneers. First edition of this scarce and wonderfully illustrated airway map, based on the very popular Gay Geography pictographic maps published the year before by Ruth Taylor White which inspired an entire generation of cartographic illustrators and imitators. This work opens with map showing the Lindbergh Line stretching from Los Angeles to New York, followed by pictographic maps showing humorous cartoon figures and sites across the country through Kingman, Winslow, Albuquerque, Amarillo, Wichita, Kansas City, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Chicago, and New York. Each of these maps contain small figures depicting cliche characters at work and play, including cowboys, American Indians, loggers, farmers, aviators, prisoners in Joliet, manufacturing, and more. [Worldcat locates 2 copies (NY Public Library and Newberry (Proof copy)); See: Griffin, Mapping Wonderlands: Illustrated Cartography, pp. 192-193]. Near fine, bright copy of a scarce title.

Contact seller3-star sellerA very interesting record of a cross-country automobile trip in 1936. Original typed document of 7 pages, mounted on six sheets of a heavier stock. The journal pages are in fine condition but the backing paper has some edge chipping. In 1936 this was a formidable excursion; unreliable cars, bad roads, xenophobia and many other ha…zards presented themselves to the driver on this voyage. The party consisted of five travelers; Rev. and Mrs. A. D. Deyo and their daughter [?] Eleanor and the Rev. and Mrs. George D. Wood. It must have been a commodious vehicle. We never learn which of these people wrote this diary but we do know it was one of the men as their are frequent quips such as "The women went swimming." They all took turns driving. They left Napanoch, NY, on July 27th and right from the very start they had problems; in Napanoch they had to get a push from a good Samaritan. On the 3rd day they were in Ohio and the writer comments on seeing signs "Communism Will Not be Tolerated" and "Ku Klux Klan Rides Again." Car trouble again on that day. In Kansas he notes that locusts have completely stripped the fields. By the seventh day they were in New Mexico where they visited Las Animas and stayed in an adobe cottage in Taos. On the ninth day they visited cliff dwellings in Arizona and the Grand Canyon where two of the party descended into the canyon on horseback. Finally by the twelfth day they were in Barstow, California. He notes in pencil that they had driven 3445 miles in 12 1/2 days. A voyage made excessively long by frequent car problems. They spent the next 12 days in the Southern California area, visiting friends and fishing. They even went down to Tiajuana and Agua Caliente. Surprisingly they did not visit San Francisco or Yosemite. They started their return trip on 8/27 from San Bernardino. They went through Bryce Canyon and Salt Lake City. Wyoming, Nebraska, Illinois, Ohio and finally home. For each day the author notes the mileage, sights seen, restaurants and accommodations. They visited numerous reservations along the way, likely to check on their co-religionists. They also must have been somewhat young as they often stayed at AAA campgrounds. The AAA is frequently mentioned; repair shops, campgrounds, hotels, restaurants. The frequency of car problems is astounding. On a separate smaller sheet the writer listed all their expenses for the trip and other statistics. For example; the car got 16.8 miles to the gallon and the average cost of gas was 20.7 cents per gallon.
