Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated First American Edition. This was Magnhild Haalke's first novel. You can see the covers in the photographs provided. They are in very nice condition, very clean, with little to no wear. The label on the spine (second photo) is tanned and has a small stain. This book is solidly bound. There are no cracks or spaces. The pages are nicely tight. They are also very clean. Scrolling through, I saw only a few instances of a tiny spot of soiling and only on the margin. There are no markings in this book. No attachments. No one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The pages are also in very nice condition. I saw only a few thin creases and one quarter crease. There was also a nick to the middle page edge which has caused a very slight dent at the outer page edge of eight or nine pages. 'Haalke made her literary debut in 1935 with the novel Allis sønn. Her deep psychological insight and great environmental descriptions ensured her a lasting place in Norwegian literature. Eventually she wrote nearly 30 books. Haalke made use of strong, colorful language and lush figures of speech. Her novels often focused on adult insensitive treatment of defenseless youth. The role of the mother in childhood development was a frequent subject. In several books she wrote of values relating to childhood environment and family traditions. Haalke was awarded Gyldendal's Endowment in 1949 and the Dobloug Prize in 1980. She was the first recipient of Mads Wiel Nygaards Endowment, which she was awarded in 1953, which she shared with novelist, Lizzie Juvkam.'.

Blue Cloth. Condition: Very Good +. First American Edition. First American Printing. No Marks Or Damage, Gilt A Little Faded, Small [Less Than 1/2 Square Inch] Rub Mark On Spine. Per Wikipedia, Ellen Karolina Sofia Key (Swedish: [?kej]; 1849 - L 1926) Was A Swedish Feminist Writer On Many Subjects In The Fields Of Family Life, Ethics And Education And Was An Important Figure In The Modern Breakthrough Movement. She Was An Early Advocate Of A Child-Centered Approach To Education And Parenting, And Was Also A Suffragist. She Is Best Known For Her Book On Education Barnets Århundrade (1900), Which Was Translated Into English In 1909 As The Century Of The Child. Key Grew Up In An Atmosphere Of Liberalism, And Throughout The 1870S Her Political Beliefs Were Radically Liberal. She Was Republican-Minded, With The Idea Of Freedom Holding Vast Importance For Her. As The 1880S Advanced, Her Thinking Became Even More Radical, Affecting First Her Religious Beliefs And Then Her Views On Life In Society In General. This Was The Outcome Of Extensive Reading. During The Latter Part Of The 1880S And Particularly In The 1890S, She Began To Read Socialist Literature And Turned Increasingly Towards Socialism. Key Was Raised In A Rigid Christian Household, But While Growing Up She Started Questioning Her Views. From 1879 She Studied Charles Darwin, Herbert Spencer And T. H. Huxley. In The Autumn Of That Year She Met Both Huxley And Haeckel, The German Biologist And Philosopher, In London. The Principle Of Evolution, In Which Ellen Key Had Come To Believe, Was Also To Have An Influence On Her Educational Views. She Is Quoted As Having Said: "Side By Side With The Class War, The Culture War Must Ceaselessly Be Waged By The Young And Among The Young Upon Whom Rests The Responsibility Of Making The New Society Better For All Than The Old Could Be.".

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good- dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Boris Artzybasheff (illustrator). First American Edition. [good solid copy with minimal wear, would grade a little higher but for some discoloration to the cloth along both joints; the jacket is a little edgeworn, with a couple of tiny surface-peel spots on the front panel, and a small irregular hole near the right side of the front panel]. A re-telling of the Biblical story of Jonah (and, eventually, a "sea monster" rather than a whale per se), "an amusing and curiously disconcerting novel," told in such a fashion that "the religious press of the author's native Denmark has not been able to make up its mind whether the book is a satire or a naive confession of faith." Laid in is a two-page pre-publication press release, dated January 17, 1939, entitled "Memorandum from Mr. Knopf to Friends of Borzoi Books," the text of which is very similar to that of the jacket blurb. The extremely brief Wikipedia article on this author states (without citing a source) that he was "excluded" (by which I assume is meant expelled) from the Danish Writers' Association in 1946; maybe the country's "religious press" finally made up their mind, and didn't like what they'd figured out.

Originally published in the author's native Danish, this story based on Jonah and the Whale was published in its American edition as "The Reluctant Prophet". Tandrup working for the Nazi-sympathising newspaper Fædrelandet during the occupation of Denmark, and at the end of WWII was sentenced to three years in prison for his activities. Somewhat ironically one key accusation against him was that he had written articles blaming the Soviet Union rather than the Nazis for the Katyn Massacre, something that was eventually confirmed to be true.
