Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. 1st Edition. Stated 'First Edition, 1969.' You can see the blue covers in the photos. They look very good. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright, although a light vertical crease passes over them. The six cover edges are in very good shape, no rubbing. The four corners are also in excellent shape, no rubbing. There is crinkling at both spine ends, a little more so at the top one, also a little crease a little ways down. There are a couple of small, light white scratches on the front. The page edges look very good, very clean. The top page edge is yellow. The spine has a slight forward lean, but the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The pages are very clean. Scrolling through, I didn't find any instances of soiling. The inside covers and end papers are yellow. They all look very good. The pages are in top-notch condition. I'm not finding any creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. This book was originally sent to a book reviewer. There is a light blue Farrar, Straus & Giroux review slip inside that states the publisher 'takes pleasure in sending you this copy for review', etc. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It is in very good condition. There are no tears anywhere. It's very clean. There's a little bit of light toning at a few margins and on the spine. There's also a little bit of light crinkling in a few places. The flaps are in solid shape. There is a two-line crease below the front flap's top corner. That's about all the wear. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. The jacket was in a fitted protective cover when I purchased it some years ago, but I just removed it after noticing that it wasn't perfectly fitted. I'll replace it with a new one after the photos are scanned. From the dust jacket: 'The story of a clash between young and old, change and tradition, skeptics and believers. Charming, heartwarming, and as memorable as the other five best-selling stories about the crafty country priest.'.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 261 pages. Published in 1991. Rare Antonio Lobo Antunes collectible set. A fine copy of "An Explanation of The Birds" with a fine copy of The New Yorker Magazine May 4, 2009 Issue. The latter features the first full-length Profile in English on Lobo Antunes (by one of his greatest admirers, the literary critic/culture philosopher Peter Conrad). The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Antonio Lobo Antunes' "Explicao dos passaros" in a felicitous English translation. The Other Great Novelist of Portugal. "What distinguishes 'An Explanation of The Birds' from other novels is the manner of the telling. Past and present intermingle on the page with no markings or divisions acting as cues to the reader. Scenes from the past share space with scenes from the present within the same paragraph. It's a remarkable strategy that demands the reader remain ever-attentive, but the effect is mesmerizing" (Ian Colford). "Antonio Lobo Antunes chooses to manifest his debts to Freud, Joyce, and Faulkner on the surface, but in the depths, he is a great original. His is a very dark and searing vision of reality at its fiercest, and will leave its mark on sensitive readers everywhere" (Harold Bloom). It seems amazing at first that the two greatest novelists of late-modern Europe, the late Jose Saramago and Antonio Lobo Antunes, are both Portuguese, until one realizes that the truest and deepest subject of literature is every human pain, which Portugal, former world empire, impoverished European Union member-nation, and despairing yet still-hopeful people, supplies in inexhaustible abundance. Their language, particularly its tonality, is radically different, and in literature, tone is everything: As Peter Conrad points out, Saramago's is "benign" whereas Lobo Antunes' is "anguished". But their subject is the same: A nation not of contrasts but of extremes - unlike Europe and very much like America. An absolute "must-have" title for Antonio Lobo Antunes collectors. This title is a late-modern classic. It comes with a fine copy of The New Yorker Magazine Issue, which features the very first full-length essay on Antonio Lobo Antunes in English by Peter Conrad, himself a great writer. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws or are subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce set thus. One of the greatest writers of the 20th century and our time. A fine set. (SEE ALSO OTHER ANTONIO LOBO ANTUNES TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0802113397. no.
