Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Scholar's name to ffep (D. Gerber). ; Loeb Classical Library; 432 pages; This volume collects some of the liveliest examples of Greek literary portraiture. The Characters of Theophrastus sketches thirty hypothetical men, each dominated by a single fault, such as rudeness, superstitution, or greed. Unassuming in style, the sketches nonetheless bear resemblance on the one hand to Aristotle's account of faults and virtues and on the other to the vivid figures of Menandrian New Comedy. This new text and translation by Jeffrey Rusten is based on the most recent scholarship. Herodas flourished in the 270s and 260s--the high point of Hellenistic poetry. His poems are choliambic mimes, dramatic dialogues that depict characters in everyday urban settings and situations. I. C. Cunningham presents a new translation of Herodas, based on his Teubner text. Also included here, in a reprint of the earlier Loeb edition by A. D. Knox, are the fragments of Greek poetry in the choliambic meter--especially those which offer a tantalizing glimpse into the raucous and sordid world of Hipponax--and the lyric iambics on themes of Cynic philosophy by Cercidas.

Add to basketLyra Graeca III Translated by J. M. Edmonds Published in London by William Heinemann Ltd, 1967 Description This 1967 London edition of Lyra Graeca III, translated by J. M. Edmonds and issued as part of the Loeb Classical Library, presents a substantial collection of the surviving fragments of ancient Greek lyric poetry. Bound in the characteristic green cloth of the Loeb Greek series and complete with its dust jacket, the volume remains in very good condition. The boards are strong and clean, the binding firm and tight, and the text block bright and well preserved. The dust jacket is also in very good condition, price clipped, with only minimal signs of shelf wear and handling consistent with careful ownership. This third volume in Edmonds' important multi-volume work continues his comprehensive gathering and translation of the fragmentary lyric poets of archaic and early classical Greece. As with all Loeb Classical Library editions, the Greek text appears on the left-hand page with the English translation on the facing page, making the volume both academically useful and accessible to the general reader with an interest in classical literature. Edmonds' work assembles poetic fragments preserved in quotations by later authors, scholiasts, and anthologists, thereby reconstructing voices that would otherwise have been lost to history. The subject matter encompasses the rich and varied tradition of Greek lyric poetry, including themes of love and desire, war and heroism, mythological narrative, religious devotion, civic life, and the sympotic culture of the ancient Greek world. The lyric poets represented in this series illuminate the social and cultural fabric of archaic Greece, offering insight into personal expression, communal identity, and the development of poetic form prior to and alongside the rise of classical drama and philosophy. The volume is therefore of particular interest to scholars and students of Classics, ancient history, comparative literature, and the transmission of fragmentary texts. Edmonds' translations, though reflective of early twentieth-century scholarship, remain valued for their clarity and literary sensitivity. This volume stands as both a scholarly resource and a collectible example of the enduring Loeb Classical Library series.
