Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. JUD 039078 The Soncino Press Babylonian Talmud seems to have a complicated publishing history. As near as I can tell by looking at the Biographical History, this volume was published some time around 1961. It is volume II of the SEDER KODASHIM and contains HULLIN, translated into English with notes, glossary and indices by Eli Cashdan. It has 861 pages. It contains 12 chapters and I am relatively certain that it contains both volume 1 and 2 Hullin from the original 1948 edition, combined here into one volume. This edition is all in English. It has red boards with gilt titles on spine. Top edge is gilt. Two ribbons within. In very good and tight condition. Previously privately owned.

First complete English translation and first Soncino edition of the Babylonian Talmud, a revered and significant work of Jewish scholarship. Octavo, 52 volumes in the original publisher's deluxe full pebbled morocco with gilt titles and raised bands to the spine, gilt Soncino Press insignia to each front panel, gilt-ruled turn-ins and inner dentelles, top edge gilt. One of thirty-five special sets, signed by the editor in Vol. I. In near fine condition. Rare. The Soncino Talmud holds a significant place in Jewish scholarship as the first complete English translation of the Babylonian Talmud. Published between 1935 and 1952 under the general editorship of Rabbi Isidore Epstein, it made the vast corpus of rabbinic discourse accessible to a broad English-speaking audience for the first time. The project drew on a team of distinguished scholars and translators, whose work combined careful fidelity to the Aramaic and Hebrew original with clear and readable English prose. Beyond its monumental achievement in translation, the Soncino Talmud expanded access to Jewish learning by bridging the gap between traditional yeshiva study and modern academic or lay readership. Its publication marked a pivotal moment in twentieth-century Jewish intellectual history, establishing a foundation for later translations and cementing its enduring importance as both a scholarly resource and a cultural milestone.
