The first two components of the Ring cycle were Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold), which was completed in 1854, and Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), which was finished in 1856. The plate opposite page 72 is absent, and the plate opposite page 112 has been removed with the background page cut down to a smaller size and loosely laid in in the correct place. A very good copy, the b…inding square and firm, the cloth lightly browned to the spine and board edges, the gilt a little faded in a few areas. The plates and tissue guards are all present and in fine condition. The contents, with a 1911 gift inscription to the front free endpaper, a few spots to the prelims and light toning to the margins, are otherwise clean throughout. The second of two volumes in the beautifully illustrated Arthur Rackham edition of Richard Wagner's The Ring of Nibelung, a cycle of four operas based on Germanic and Norse mythology.
