A scarce example. The first volume is the Old Testament from Genesis to Chronicles. The second volume is the remainder of the Old Testament from Ezra to Maccabees. The New Testament is contained in the third volume which we lack. Published by order of the Catholic Church Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith or ?Sacrae Congregat. de Propaganda Fide?, this Arabic translation of the Bible was added for the use of the Eastern Churches in Rome, in the year 1671. The text is not vocalized (no diacritics or vowel points). Based on the 1650 edition, however modified, corrected, and enlarged, this edition is considered to be the first printed edition of the complete Bible in Arabic. Philip Guadagnolo and Louis or Luigi Maracci contributed as translators and editors. It "eventually won general acceptance among Arabic-speaking Christians". The above title is expressed both in Arabic and in Latin and is followed by a Preface to the Reader. This edition of the Arabic Bible was overseen by Maronite Archbishop of Damascus, Sergius Risius, by the order of Pope Urban VIII but it was not published until 1671; prelates of the Eastern churches, such as the Archbishop of Aleppo and the Patriarch of the Copts, requested the publishing of the Bible in the Arabic tongue, as manuscript copies had become rare and frequently incorrect. The Pope approved this and charged the Congregation of the Propagation of the Faith to execute the work; they appointed Sergius Risius to undertake the revision. All accessible Arabic versions were compared to each other and Hebrew and Latin editions; the present Arabic translation was composed based on such extensive review whereby Risius was assisted in this undertaking by Philip Guadagnoli. They jointly completed the Arabic Pentateuch or Thora with the Latin version placed by its side and following Sergius Risius?s passing (d. 1638), Guadagnoli completed the Old Testament in 1647, and the New Testament in 1650.
