Desire Christian was one of the great glass craftsmen of his time, but was overshadowed by the great Frenchman, Emile Galle. However, Christian produced thousands of artistically designed and decorated glass for the French market for some eleven years, many of which were largely attributed to Galle even recently. Cloth; extremities lightly rubbed; edges a trifle marked; very small name-stamp; an excellent copy lacking the dustwrapper. 'Considerable evidence exists that many glass objects bearing the Galle signature were crafted by Désiré Christian'. Désiré Jean-Baptiste Christian (1846-1907) 'was a French master glassmaker [who] notably worked with Charles and Émile Gallé at the Meisenthal glassworks' (Wikipedia).

Traub argues that Christian, chief decorator for Burgun, Schverer & Co., was responsible for many works attributed to Gallé under a confidential 19th-century arrangement. The book traces the historical relationship, examines documentary evidence, and provides photographic comparisons and detailed analysis useful to collectors and scholars of Art Nouveau and French cameo glass. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white reproductions and color plates, including catalog material from Burgun, Schverer & Co., plus a chronology, bibliography, gallery section, and identification guidance. An important reference work for serious art glass collectors, particularly those interested in Gallé, Nancy school glass, and late 19th-century French decorative arts. A clean, sharp copy in collectible condition, housed in a Brodart protective sleeve. Jules S. Traub (1913-1993) was a Chicago-based art glass collector and independent researcher whose investigative work focused on late 19th-century French decorative glass. Motivated by anomalies he encountered while collecting, Traub conducted extensive archival research in Europe to uncover documentary evidence regarding Désiré Christian's role in glass production associated with Emile Gallé. His work significantly influenced collector discourse and scholarship surrounding Burgun, Schverer & Co. and Nancy school glass attribution.
