T. Travers, is now told for the first time. Although their names were little known to the general public each one of the brothers made a significant contribution to the development of aviation, both in England and abroad. Herbert Gardner Travers, DSC (1 April 1891 - 16 April 1958) was a British flying ace of the First World War, credited with five aerial victories. He later worked in civil aviation and returned to service during the Second World War. James Lindsay Travers was born in 1886, and after receiving his technical education at King's College was apprenticed with the firm of Legros and Knowles, Willesden Junction. Thenceforward he devoted himself especially to aeronautical engineering, and conducted experimental work with Prof. Huntington, at Eastchurch. After spending several years on experimental work, he took his pilot's certificate at the Graham-White School, and subsequently occupied various positions as designer and instructor in aviation. He was elected a Graduate of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1907, and was transferred to Associate Member in 1912. During the war he rendered splendid service in the Royal Air Force, attaining the rank of Lieut.-Colonel, and was subsequently in charge of Technical Information under the Controller General of Civil Aviation at the Air Board. This book contains extracts from the letters of J. L., H. G. and C. T. Travers and their family; and from the log-books of H. G. Travers, with background material, linking narrative and some pages of reminiscence by E. Travers. Illustrated throughout with photographs from the family collection. Ref QQQ 6.
