Published in 1930, Volume 6 was edited by Charles Travis Clay (18851978). This volume largely relates to the West Riding. An appendix contains an index of deeds relating to Yorkshire found in the Descriptive Catalogue of Ancient Deeds in the Public Record Office (18901915). Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This thirteen-volume series, which first appeared between 1914 and 1965, is an extensive collection of the pre-thirteenth-century charters and related records of Yorkshire, which had previously remained largely unpublished. The first three volumes were edited by William Farrer (18611924), after whose death Charles Travis Clay (18851978) took up the task. The series was well respected for the quality of Farrer's editing, which was surpassed only by that of Clay in the later volumes. Volume 4 (1935) is the first of two devoted to the honour of Richmond. This volume includes the charters of the lords of the honour as well as texts concerned with land in Yorkshire. Each Latin document is amply annotated in English and accompanied by a discussion of its content and points of interest. The volume also contains facsimile plates of select documents as well as detailed indexes. Before the appearance of this series (191465), the pre-thirteenth-century documents of Yorkshire were largely unpublished. This thirteen-volume collection was well respected for its extensive nature and the high quality of its editing. Volume 4 (1935) is the first of two devoted to the honour of Richmond. The author delves into the origins of the jury system, tracing its roots back to the Carolingian inquisitio and its development under the Norman kings. The book explores how sworn juries, initially serving as witnesses to facts, gradually transformed into impartial decision-makers, hearing evidence and delivering verdicts on questions of law and fact. The book illuminates how this transition coincided with a broader shift in legal thought, as the age-old reliance on the ordeal and the duellum gave way to a more formalized and equitable system of justice. Examining the detailed records of Assize Rolls, the author offers a vivid and insightful account of the practical workings of the early jury system, highlighting its key procedural elements and its role in both civil and criminal matters. This book provides a compelling glimpse into the development of a cornerstone of English law, revealing the intricate process by which the jury system, a hallmark of modern legal systems, emerged and evolved. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
