Mit zahlr. Abb. Geheftet. Condition: Gut. 3rd imp. 8 S. plus Tafeln. Einband leicht berieben. - The word quilt is derived from the Latin culcita, which means a stuffed sack, mattress or cushion. The Oxford Dictionary defines a quilt as "An article of bed-furniture, consisting essentially of two large pieces of woven material having a layer of some soft substance (such as wool, flock, or down) placed between them; . . in later use, a coverlet of similar make, especially one in which the lining is kept in place by stitches or lines of stitching passing through the whole (the mediaeval quiltpoint or counterpoint)." The use of the word can be traced back as far as the thirteenth century at least and so the making of quilts is undoubtedly an old traditional craft in the British Isles. The spelling of the word varies much and forms such as cowltes or qwhiltez arc not uncommon. In mediaeval and later inventories quilts are very often mentioned. Among the possessions of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, at Kenilworth in 1584 were several elaborate quilts including one described as "A faire quilte of crymson sattin, vj breadths iij yards 3 quarters naile deepe, all lozenged over with silver twiste, in the midst a cinqucfoile within a garland of ragged staves, fringed rounde aboute with a small fringe of crymson silkc, lyned through with white fustian."
