First edition. Printed in England for Boni & Liveright by the Oxford University Press. A stunningly beautiful version of Aesop's fables, with Art Deco illustrations by Phyllis Trery. Excellent typography and design touches framing the pages enhance the presentation. Each illustration is a full page and apparently pochoir colored, with broad strokes of color building up basic outlines. Very good copy, spine label rather abraded, otherwise quite fresh. Gift inscription dated Colorado, 1926 on the front free endpaper. Notably, the cover label in this copy is a bright iridescent green, not plain white as seen in some other copies, and much more in keeping with the artist's palette.

Phyllis A. Trery. (illustrator). First Edition. First edition, limited to two hunderd copies only. The author has taken the dramatic works of Bernard Shaw and retold them in a jungle context, replacing Shaw's human characters with animals: an endearing and somewhat eccentric book, brilliantly illustrated in art deco style and hand-coloured in pochoir by Phyllis A. Trery. 'In the jangle and jungle of life you must kill or be killed, you must eat or be eaten, you must trap or be trapped. The great Rhino knew it-had always known it, had prepared for it, had grown a lovely thick skin for it, and long, thick tusks for it. And he hewed his was through the jungle and nothing could stop him and he stopped at nothingâ"andâ"ugh ! - he was always there, grabbing and getting, spreading and swelling, overtaking, overpowering, overwhelming; nothing could stop him. But even a Rhino has his soft side, and his soft side made him up one day to look for a mate. Being the Rhino that he was, only the best would satisfy him. Spying a beautiful and haughty Peacock strutting about in her proud way in the dazzling sunshine, he made up his mind. "I'll have her," he said to himself ; and went after her and won her and she bore him three offsprings, two she-males and a he, and their names were Barbara, Sarah, and Stephen. Barbara was a Honey-bee, Sarah a Salamander, and Stephen a Mule. (Imagine it !)'. Small quarto, bound in original gilt-decorated quarter vellum, top edge gilt, 216 pages, 15 full page colour illustrations, small closed tear to back board, a very good copy.

There was also a signed limited deluxe edition of 200 copies. Beautifully illustrated with full-colour art deco style plates by Phyllis A. Trery. ***Very good in mustard-yellow cloth-covered boards with black titles and illustrations to the spine and front board. Bottom corner of back board creased. Page block edges also quite clean, without any foxing. Internally, the book is also very good, with no ownership inscriptions and clean pages. ***The author has written a gift inscription in pencil at the bottom of the second printed page: "To Margaret from Gwladys Evan Morris July 18 1949". No offsetting or foxing to the printed pages. No dustwrapper. ***216 pages. 230 mm x 175 mm. ***Contents: Major Barbara, Candida, Man and Superman, Pygmalion, Arms and the Man, Mrs warren's Profession, The Doctor's Dilemma, Captain Brassbound's Conversion, The Devil's Disciple, Fanny's First Play. ***'Gwladys Evan Morris (7 June 1879 - 6 March 1957) was a Welsh stage actress and writer. Morris was born in Wrexham, Denbighshire, Wales. Her acting career began in 1903, when she went on a tour to the West Indies and India with Frank Benson's company. She also travelled to the United States, Ireland, Nova Scotia, and New Zealand. She mainly acted in plays by George Bernard Shaw, whom she greatly admired. From 1916 to 1920, she appeared in Shakespearean plays with the Henry Jewett Players, and then in London theatres from 1920 on. In 1929, Morris toured with the Macdona Company. In 1931, she played Vera Lyndon in "Strange Orchestra" at the Embassy Theatre, and in 1937 was in "After October" at the Criterion Theatre and the Aldwych Theatre. She retired in 1939. She wrote "Tales from Bernard Shaw", which was first published in 1929 by George G. Harrap and Co. of London, and was printed by H & J Pillans & Wilson of Edinburgh. A U.S. edition was published in 1929 by Frederick A. Stokes of New York. In the introduction to the book, Morris explains that the character of Jack (a chattering monkey in her story of "Man and Superman") is Shaw himself, and that the woman's part in another of her stories ("Captain Brassbound's Conversion") is written "expressly for and round the personality of Ellen Terry", a famous actress of the day who had died, a year before publication, in 1928.' [Wiki] ***A first trade edition, published between the wars in 1929, in the original decorated cloth. Beautifully illustrated, and a SIGNED and INSCRIBED copy. Whilst there are a number of surviving copies of the deluxe limited edition, copies of the trade edition are uncommon, and signed copies are scarce. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
