Cortes das folhas carminados. Impressão muito nítida, em caracteres redondos com itálicos, na dedicatória, nos títulos correntes e nas notas marginais, adornada com pequeno florão na folha de rosto, com cabeções e iniciais decorativas nas peças preliminares e no início de cada um dos livros em que se divide a obra, assim como com belos cabeções de remate. Índice a duas colunas com caracteres de menores dimensões. Exemplar com ligeiros desgastes e pequenos picos de traça na encadernação que foram em parte restaurados. Com pequenos reforços marginais nas folhas de guarda. Com anotações bibliográficas manuscritas a lápis na folha de guarda posterior. Preserva a última folha em branco do último caderno, que falta na maioria dos exemplares. As folhas preliminares contêm a dedicatória à rainha D. Mariana de Áustria; Prólogo do autor; Dedicatória de Justino ao Imperador Antonino; Protestação do tradutor sobre as questões relativas ao que se diz no livro 36 desta obra sobre a origem dos judeus; uma relação dos reis da Monarquias que existiram até Alexandre; as licenças, que incluem uma extensa aprovação de José da Cunha Brochado; e as erratas. O texto termina na página 469, com o verso em branco, e as 471 a 514 incluem o índice de assuntos. Tradução portuguesa de um resumo feito por Justino da obra do historiador romano Trogo Pompeio, sobre a história do Mundo antigo até ao Império de Alexandre, que se perdeu. Além da qualidade literária da tradução, que divulgou em Portugal um influente historiador romano, esta obra é muito importante por servir para o estudo do funcionamento da censura da Inquisição e das questões dos judeus em Portugal. Efectivamente, a licença da Inquisição de 19 de Janeiro de 1725 autoriza a publicação da obra, mas sem o livro 36 onde se descreve a origem e a história dos Judeus. A obra acabará por ser publicada na íntegra, com a condição do autor acrescentar uma protestação onde declara que só traduziu o referido livro «para não faltar à verdade da tradução, nem perverter o original», apesar de não concordar com o que nele consta contrário às sagradas escrituras. Troilo de Vasconcelos da Cunha (Funchal, 1654 - Lisboa, 1729). Poeta e tradutor, Fidalgo da Casa Real, foi Secretário da Junta dos Três Estados do Reino. É autor de um poema filosófico heroico em 10 cantos, publicado em 1714, intitulado - Espelho do Invisível e de várias poesias dispersas em obras de outros autores e em manuscritos. Marco Juniano Justino, (Século II) historiador romano, autor de - Pompei Trogi Epitoma Historiarum Liber XLIIII, que é um resumo da obra perdida - Histórias Filípicas de Trogo Pompeio. Conheceu grande divulgação e exerceu grande influência durante a Idade Média, sendo a única fonte acerca do original que resumiu. Gnaeus Pompeius Trogus, (Século I a.C.) historiador romano pertencente à tribo dos Vocôncios da Gália Narbonense, autor da extensa obra - Histórias Filípicas, que abarcavam a história do mundo desde o Rei Nino da Assíria até ao Imperador Augusto, mas cujo tema principal era a história da Monarquia Macedónica. A obra está perdida e dela só se conserva o Prólogo, transcrito por Plínio, o Velho. In folio. 29x21 cm. Very clear printing, in round characters with italics, in the dedication, current titles and marginal notes, adorned with a small fleuron on the title page, with decorative headpieces and initials in the preliminary pieces and at the beginning of each of the books into which the work is divided, as well as with beautiful headpieces. Index in two columns with smaller characters. Copy showing slight signs of wear and small moth holes on the binding which has been partly restored. With small marginal reinforcements on the endpapers. With handwritten bibliographical annotations in pencil on the back flyleaf. Preserves the last blank leaf of the last notebook, which is missing from most copies. The preliminary pages contain the dedication to Queen Mariana of Austria; the author"s Prologue; Justin"s Dedication to Emperor Antoninus; the translator"s Protestation on the issues relating to what is said in book 36 of this work about the origin of the Jews; a list of the kings of the Monarchies that existed until Alexander; the licences, which include an extensive approval by José da Cunha Brochado; and the errata. The text ends on page 469, with blank back, and pages 471 to 514 include the subject index. Portuguese translation of a summary made by Justin of the work of the Roman historian Pompeius Trogus, on the history of the Ancient World up to the Empire of Alexander, which has been lost. In addition to the literary quality of the translation, which publicised an influential Roman historian in Portugal, this work is very important because it serves to study the workings of the Inquisition"s censorship and the issues of the Jews in Portugal. In fact, the Inquisition"s licence of 19 January 1725 authorised the publication of the work, but without book 36 describing the origin and history of the Jews.
