On trouve monté en tête deux L.A.S. de l'auteur. La première datée d'Arras (barrée "Rép. 27 mars 93") est adressée à "Monsieur Savine" : "Votre lettre est trop laconique pour que je puisse y répondre sur le champ. A quelle page, par quel chapitre finiriez-vous le 1er/2e volume ? Mettrez-vous tout Milan, ou rejetterez-vous le 3e chapitre dans le volume suivant ? cequi serait mauvais, je crois. Enfin, à quelle date paraîtra le 3e vol. ? Je ne puis vous renvoyer d'épreuves, car il faudra changer l'en-tête des pages si la scission a lieu [. ] Puis on y joindrait quelques cartes, une générale, une de Rivoli et une de Marengo. Plusieurs personnes m'ont fait remarquer que cela manquait [ . ]". La seconde est une carte postale autographe signée adressée à M. Landry, datée de Dunkerque le 19 mars 1893 : "Je v/confirme l'envoi que je vous ai fait, de Boulogne, des feuilles jusqu'à la page 618. Mon permis de circulation expirant le 3 avril, je serai rentré pour cette date. Mais si vous voulez faire une communication verbale, vous pouvez vous servir du téléphone. Je serai ici demain. Vous n'avez qu'à me télégraphier et je serai au téléphone à l'heure que vous aurez fixé. Toutes mes civilités. Hôtel Chapeau-Rouge".
