The founder of the Lancia Company had in his youth been a brilliant racing driver, and the cars he went on to build were drivers' machines, from the excellent orthodox vehicles of the early years to the increasingly inventive products of the established company. But Lancia did not experiment with novelties. Everything he built was intended for sale - the rear-gearbox Zeta of 1912, the fabulous postwar V12 with its unique suspension system, the immortal Lambda and its brilliant successors of the 1930s, and the Aprilia, one of the masterpieces of automobile engineering. Nigel Trow's tremendous enthusiasm for his subject has expressed itself in an ideal combination of meticulous research and readable style. A narrative history of family, company and racing interests is followed by an extensive technical section giving the fullest specifications of every production model up to the Appia, plus a detailed account of its development.
