About this Item: The White House, Washington, D.C. One Page. Condition: Near Fine. First Printing. No date, circa 1945. one page, 8 1/2" x 11 ", Near Fine, old staple indent bottom edge. A letter sent by President Truman to those who served in World War II, with most likely a facsimilie signature, given the number of these letters that would have been received by returning servicemen, although they are relatively uncommon in today's market. The letter goes on to read "As one of the Nation's finest, you understand the most severe task one can be called upon to perform. Because you demonstrated the fortitude, resourcefulness and calm judgment necessary to carry out that task, we now look to you for leadership and example in further exalting our country in peace". This soldier, William K. Estes ( June 17, 1919- August 17, 2011 ) indeed went on to fulfill President Truman's call in a lifetime devoted to research and furthering scientific advancement. After WWII he studied under the American behaviourist B.F. Skinner on the faculty at Indiana University. He became a pioneer in the application of mathematics to the study of animal learning and human cognition, and would go on to become a Presidential National Medal of Science winner in 1997 as a selection of President Bill Clinton. About this Item: Doubleday & Company, Garden City, NY, 1955. Early printing of volume one of the memoirs of President Harry S. Truman. Octavo, original black cloth. Boldly signed by Harry S. Truman on the half-title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Jacket design by Sidney Butchkes. Jacket photograph by Eliot Elisofon. "Truman’s Memoirs are an invaluable record of the former president’s tumultuous years in office, his early days in Missouri, and his rise in local and state politics. There are delightful glimpses of his family life, striking appraisals and anecdotes of world leaders such as Churchill, Stalin, Chiang and De Gaulle, and candid disclosures about the background of national and international events. But overshadowing all is the story of the glorious task of bringing a war to an end, of working for an enduring peace and leading the free world into a new age" (Doubleday). Seller Inventory # 76005
