About this Item: The White House, Washington, D.C. One Page. Condition: Near Fine. First Printing. No date, circa 1945. one page, 8 1/2" x 11 ", Near Fine, old staple indent bottom edge. A letter sent by President Truman to those who served in World War II, with most likely a facsimilie signature, given the number of these letters that would have been received by returning servicemen, although they are relatively uncommon in today's market. The letter goes on to read "As one of the Nation's finest, you understand the most severe task one can be called upon to perform. Because you demonstrated the fortitude, resourcefulness and calm judgment necessary to carry out that task, we now look to you for leadership and example in further exalting our country in peace". This soldier, William K. Estes ( June 17, 1919- August 17, 2011 ) indeed went on to fulfill President Truman's call in a lifetime devoted to research and furthering scientific advancement. After WWII he studied under the American behaviourist B.F. Skinner on the faculty at Indiana University. He became a pioneer in the application of mathematics to the study of animal learning and human cognition, and would go on to become a Presidential National Medal of Science winner in 1997 as a selection of President Bill Clinton. Inscribed on flyleaf " Ralph Golby with best wishes Barry Goldwater 1 June '64." Goldwater had been an opponent of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the New Deal. He also had a strong dislike of Harry S. Truman and his progressive social policies. Goldwater joined the Republican Party and in 1952 was elected to the Senate. He immediately became a loyal supporter of Joe McCarthy and was one of only 22 senators who voted against his censure in December, 1954. Truman (1884 - 1972) was the 33rd president of the United States from 1945 to 1953, succeeding upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt after serving as the 34th vice president. He implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe, and established the Truman Doctrine and NATO. Truman will long be remembered as the only president to authorize use of nuclear weapons, though his decision is lauded for having ended WW II in the Pacific. The Truman administration went considerably beyond the New Deal in the area of civil rights. Although, the conservative Congress thwarted Truman's desire to achieve significant civil rights legislation, he was able to use his powers as President to achieve some important changes. He issued executive orders desegregating the armed forces and forbidding racial discrimination in Federal employment. He also established a Committee on Civil Rights and encouraged the Justice Department to argue before the Supreme Court on behalf of plaintiffs fighting against segregation. "I am pleased to comply with your request for an autograph / Harry S Truman". Seller Inventory # 2041
