A filacer was an officer in the Court of Common pleas and other courts of common law. His role was to file original writs, issue process on writs and collect related court fees. The office was abolished in 1837. This manual, written by a member of Gray's Inn, provides an excellent guide to the functions they performed. Our copy once belonged to the library of Shirburn Castle, the library of the Earls of Macclesfield, one of the finest private libraries in Great Britain. Thomas Clarke [1703-1764] was a lawyer and judge who served as Master of the Rolls. He was a protege and later close friend of the Earl of Macclesfield. OCLC locates copies in 9 North American law libraries (Columbia, Harvard, Northwestern, Social Law, UC-Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania, University of Victoria, Yale, York University).
