Paperback. Condition: Fine. First Edition. Double-sided three-panel tract measuring 10" x 6" when unfolded. Fascinating follow-up to tract 1 of this series, issued in 1956. Explains how, after viewing Myron Fagan's play "Thieves' Paradise" in 1956, Congressman Usher L. Burdick led a charge, ultimately of over 200 Congressmen, to follow up on allegations made against the U.N. in the play. Explains how the "Enemy Within" stifled any meaningful investigation. Refers to quotes by U.N.'s first Secretary-General, Trygve Lie. Considerable fine-print text. Clean and unmarked with very light wear.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Thick octavo, blue cloth lettered in silver; unclipped dust jacket, soiled. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed: "Prof. Dr. Philip C Jessup: Dear Phil - Thank you for all [the] friendly assistance in writing this book. As I told you my aspiration is that `In the Cause of Peace' will serve our common ideas and purpose - peace in this World. But who knows? I send both of you my respect and regards. Hope to see you very soon. Yours, Trygve, Norway, August 9, 1954," on the front free endpaper; Lie mentioned Jessup numerous times throughout the text. ---- A veteran U.S. diplomat, Jessup served as a judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague. He also served as a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, and as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he worked intimately with Trygve Lie, the first Secretary-General of the United Nations, as well with then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. In "the Cause of Peace," Lie credited Jessup with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. A quintessential presentation copy. Inscribed by Author(s).
