Wrappers neatly reattached with loss at the corners and spine ends, cover and foredges of first several leves with a bit of staining, first couple of leaves with corner creases and short tears, one color plate with two tears, neatly reattached, sound but good only. The black and white reproductions are fine.

(Berlin): Editions Saria, 1922 Small quarto 22x16 cm., wrappers, 22 (4) page text followed by 39 plates, and four leaves with tipped on color and b/w plates. This essay, the first assessment of Alexandra Ekster (Ekster, 1882-1949) and her work to date, was written in the Soviet Union but published in Berlin under the Zaria moniker in Russian and co-editions in German and French. Exter achieved renown for her work in Russian Futurist, Suprematist and Constructivist idioms and taught at Vkhutemas until emigrating to Paris in 1924. In Paris she quickly became part of the Russian theater and ballet with costume design. She spent her latter years as a book illustrator. Author Tugendhold (Iakov Tugendkhol'd, 1882-1928) was an eminent art historian, theorist and critic who championed the avant-garde movements from Futurism onward and became a chief theoretician of the Soviet artistic culture. NB: this book is exactly the same as the Russian language edition published simultaneously by this press and offered at much higher prices. The present copy very good+, clean and crisp.
